May 2024 Surgery Buddies ?

Wasn't sure if now was the best time to make this, but I see others making this kind of thread the month before their surgery date so I thought why not!

It feels surreal even saying I am having surgery next month!

Mine is booked on for 14/05/24 - who else will be having theirs in May?

A few questions just to get us started:

1) Are you nervous about anything? If so, what? - just in the hope that any veterans can give advice or if we can help each other. Anxiety is normal! :)

2) What have you prepared/plan to prepare for your hospital bag?

3) What are you most excited about? :)

I look forward to hearing from you all ❤️

Surgery complete! It's now 12 hours since I went under. The surgery took 90 minutes, Docs said it went well. I started to come to about 2 hours after the surgery was done. According to my wife, I

I'm in the same position, I've got two incisions that won't heal either. I'm four weeks post-op. Luckily I've no infection but the stinging and pain under the wound are unreal sometimes.

I'm down 32 lbs including pre-op diet.

Six months out, one incision hasn’t healed. It’s the one where the stomach was pulled out of. Bodies heal differently, it’ll eventually go away.

6 weeks! I was staring to struggle with water water water. Flavor mixes give me heart burn. Dietitian recommended using fruit juice to flavor the water. Its good! But be sure to really dilute and just flavor the water or it will go right through you ( sugar in the juice).
So I was recommended an absorbent dressing my one is called aquacel.

It seems to have improved the healing process and sped it up. Be warned when you first apply it, it does open up the wound a little as it sucks all the crap out of the open wound.
I was wondering how much weight you are all losing daily/weekly. I was losing .5-1lb daily for the first two weeks and now I’m just consistently losing .2lbs per day. I just hit week three so not sure if this is a kind of stall?

I’m at exactly 7 weeks post op. I’ve lost 25 lbs since surgery. I lost 15 lbs in the first 2 weeks then I stalled for a few weeks. People kept saying, your body is still healing, which was true. At 4 weeks my stomach was not inflamed anymore, the incisions looked good. Around the 5th week I started losing again. I do weigh myself daily, but I look at lbs lost weekly. I’m not particularly in a rush to lose a lot of weight super fast because I don’t want the loose skin. As long as I am losing and feeling good. Although I wasn’t losing weight during my stall, I was losing inches. I use bands to exercise my arms and legs, and I walk.

slowly but surely!!!!!

I lost 12lbs the first 2 weeks and I've lost 2lbs each week for the last 3 weeks.

I only weigh myself once a week, as I'm afraid I'll become obsessed with weighing myself.

I'm delighted with my NSV, needing to wear a belt with my trousers, and having the towel completely cover me after my shower.

I am so bored of drinking water, I'm fine in the morning I do some clear protein, and have a few different flavours. I usually finish that in the early afternoon, and then I start to struggle. I'll try some fruit juice and see if it gives me some more motivation with it.

6 weeks post op. 21lbs since surgery and 25 overall from highest weight. Im losing about 1.5-2lbs a week. But i can go all week and not lose an ounce. Then suddenly 2 lbs are gone! They say the insides with staples still need time to heal. Just because you cant see it have to remember those sutures heal slower. I have to remember just because something doesn’t make me ill doesn’t mean i should eat it! I had 2 cookies at a wedding. Didn’t bother me at all but i didn’t drink after and i probably burned all the calories walking and dancing!

I'm officially on a stall ? been stuck at the same weight for a week or so now! It's frustrating, but I know it'll pass!

I'm only losing a pound a week now myself...docs say not to worry about it, these things go in cycles...and to up my physical activity. (grumble).

Don't get discouraged. You are the heart of the May Surgeries board. Keep the posts coming.

So close to the 60 lbs. lost mark....

I'm feeling great since my May 1 surgery. Clothes fitting nice and loose, people at work saying "whoa!" Still struggling a bit with hydration.

I've been trying to find the perfect protein shake and I invite you to join me on my journey thus far.

I'm going to rate them in order for worst to best. This is my opinion only and reflects only what I've tried thus far. I'm not affiliated with any protein powder corps but if someone wants to throw some cash my way for an endorsement, I won't say no. ;-) Be advised I don't mix the shakes with anything...just 7-8 oz of cool, clear water.

Worst - Avoid at All Costs - Bodytech Whey Protein Isolate. They should call this, "aftertaste with a hint of flavor." I got the Melted Marshmallow and Cookies & Cream flavors in the 1.5 lb tubs. I choked the C&C down but couldn't stomach the marshmallow. Vitamin Shoppe did me a solid and let me exchange the opened tub back for store credit.

Your Mileage May Vary - Ghost: The gimmick with Ghost is that they put a little of the flavored stuff in with the mix. That means the Oreo flavor I bought had a few Oreos mixed up in the powder. Not so many that it makes the protein/sugars mix per serving bad, but enough to effect the flavor and make you feel like you're having a forbidden treat. But hang on. For me, the shake (even with just water) was super sweet. Plus, the Oreo bits clump together and make for a chewy gooey swig. Ghost was too much for my newly cut stomach and made me nauseous. Now that I'm a few months past surgery, I can tolerate it somewhat better but it still isn't my favorite in consistency or stomach tolerance.

Middle of the Road - Gold Standard: This powder never upset my stomach, mixes well, and is a good mid-range price point. There is a bit of aftertaste but it's not a deal breaker. Flavors are kind of forgettable. Double Rich Chocolate and Cinnamon Roll are safe bets.

Getting Better - ISO100: This is a little more expensive than the choices below, you get fewer servings per dollar. You get what you pay for though. This powder mixes up nice and the flavors are pretty good. The Dunkin Glazed Donut was great! Gourmet Chocolate was also a cut above.

Best so Far - Transparent Labs: Figures it would be the most expensive brand right? But this powder has been great on my poor stomach. The selling point here is that it's a minimalist powder, there are only 4-5 ingredients compared to the long list of additives you'll see in some of the cheaper brands. No stomach upset at all with this. Flavors are also subdued but pleasant. I've had the Oatmeal Chocolate Chip and Salted Caramel. Nice taste, not overwhelming. When it's shake time I think to myself, "Ah, this will be nice." rather than "Oh good grief...yeah, let's go choke it down."

Ones I Want to Try: If any of you have tried these brands, I'd love to get your take before I shell out money:

- Ryse

- Gorilla Mode

- Clean Simple Eats

I have just found this site today. I had my gastric sleeve May 21 thought I was doing ok but see others are zooming way ahead of me. I have lost 10.7 kg since surgery (exactly 6 weeks ago). I only lost 400 grams on my liver reduction diet. According to weight charts, I need to lose 80 kg more, but I would be thrilled with 63kg. I am currently 137.9 kg.

I had the same feeling at first. But the important thing is that you personally are going in the right direction. Slow or fast doesn’t matter. (Although i would love the weight to ‘go’ faster). Im at 9weeks and every week shows a tiny bit of progress.

Had vacation with friends last week. A bit worrisome. I read everyone having dumping syndrome and restriction that helps keep you ‘honest’. I cant say i had any adverse effect. We ate out daily. I did watch my portions and proper mechanics- no drinking 30 min After eating. Only ate about a cup at a sitting.  Had a bite of a donut, one day ice cream, a variety of small things that i should not have eaten, a fry or two…..I did not get sick —however, i also only lost 0.5lb this week :(
So this week back on track! I still have 85lbs to shed.

8 weeks PO today and 14 kg down- 56 more to go- I made myself one of those goal thermometers so I can colour it in week by week- I also have a weight tracking app- but there is something nice about colouring in the thermometer.
