Is this revision due to GERD? I'm trying to make the decision between sleeve and bypass myself so any experience you had would be helpful. Thanks.

Hi David. Have you met with your surgeon yet? They will likely have an opinion of which surgery they feel is best for you. If you are on certain medications they may trend towards sleeve IF all other things are equal but if you have GERD they typically lean towards bypass (not always though). Those are not the only factors and it’s not exactly that clear cut. It certainly doesn’t hurt to do your research but you surgeon should help considerably to make this decision.

Mine said he would do sleeve or bypass (if I really wanted it) but he recommended sleeve. He thought bypass was overkill for me and the NP thought because of my medications that the conservative option was safer. I didn’t lose all the weight I hoped though and struggle to keep it off. I will always sorta wonder if I would’ve lost more with bypass. Who knows though. I am on medication that causes weight gain so I may be in the same exact boat with bypass. It’s really hard to say.

They are both really good surgeries, though. Regardless of whether I can fit into my skinny jeans I am very happy I did the surgery. I was already beginning to have knee pain with exercise and I know that at the rate I was going I would be even heavier now than I was pre surgery with more knee pain so the Fact that I am maintaining anywhere below that weight and pain free is better than I could’ve done on my own. I didn’t have to decide on which surgery until my pre op appointment. Hopefully your team will give you time to make your decision too.

Well I have some gerd with weight gain with my vsg surgery which was in 2018. So last year I asked if I can get resleeved due to the weight gain and slight gerd issues. and i was told in California they don’t do that the only option I had was bypass, So I went with that..my surgery was cancelled at 0100 last year due to my iron levels. I had to do the 10 week class as part of the revision requirements. So I’m all cleared now (this year) i plan on doing things way different this time around and actually puttin in the work..with my sleeve I didn’t workout or anything (I don’t advise that all) plus we were in the pandy sooooooo crossing fingers that I find things that help me along this new journey so I stay consistent but it’s all mental Honestly!

I did not have a revision, I was "virgin" bypass. But, have no regrets and only wish I had done it earlier.

I'm not sure what California has to do with it, as I know several surgeons who do resleeves, either by themselves or as part of a DS conversion. I suspect that it is more of surgeon's preference as resleeves can be more challenging than a virgin sleeve, as is often the case when doing a repair vs. an original build.

Have you had your sleeve evaluated as to what is its' problem - is there a hiatal hernia causing your GERD, or a bit of a shape problem? Some surgeons aren't all that well practiced on fixing hiatal hernias on a sleeved stomach and will go direct to a bypass instead, as that is what they are most familiar with; a bit of overkill for that problem, but easier for them (if not on the patient....) I wouldn't consider a revision until understanding what the problem with the original surgery is (was there something wrong with how it was done, was it incompatible with my personality, or did I just learn how to eat around it and need something stronger along with better habits?)

It's good that you are taking in a new attitude on the regain problem, as neither a resleeve by itself nor a bypass do great things for that overall - most of the additional loss seems to come from a return to extreme dieting around surgery time, but the actual revised anatomy doesn't do a lot that you already haven't had done; A revision to a DS tends to do better (actually more of a completion, as the DS uses the sleeve as its basis,) but that probably isn't an option with the group you are dealing with if they can't do a resleeve (if it were appropriate.) But with a sleeve, regain and "some" gerd, I would at least be looking into the DS as an option before proceeding, as the bypass is a difficult thing to undo or revise once it is done.

I’m having my 2013 sleeve converted to bypass on 1/9/2023 because of GERD. I’m not too happy that I have to go through with this as I never wanted a full bypass and have enjoyed being able to still eat a some what normal diet (albeit with less volume than pre sleeve). I’m down between 60-70 lbs from my top weight pre sleeve. Not as much as I really need to feel good in my body but certainly healthier.
a few questions:

1. anyone done this and can share their experience?

2. What was you weight loss when you went from sleeve to bypass? I’ve heard I can expect maybe 10-15%.

3. what is DS? I saw it on this forum but don’t know what it is.

4. any tips or things to watch out for? I’ll be glad to get rid of the GERD and hopefully avoid all the bad things that can come from that but I’m super worried I won’t be able to follow the bypass regime and have other health problems from not following things as directed.
