Don't mind people who say that you are taking the easy way out. Going under anesthesia and all the test and planning is not the easy way out. I am going to strut into work with no high blood pressure,

  • I'm also pre-op and have this question. I plan on taking a week or a week and a half of vacation, then go back to work. I have excellent disability and FMLA but honestly I don't want the questions

  • I go back to work in the morning after three weeks off, and I am surprisingly excited. At work there will still be a focus on getting enough fluids and remembering to eat a meal. The post surg pr

I was off 2.5 weeks but then developed an ulcer and needed some time off for the endoscopy. And then I almost immediately had my gallbladder go, and needed another 2 weeks off from that. O__O Fill out an FMLA form just in case.

i do physical labor work, so i had to take 6 weeks off.

I am wondering about this too. I can work from home on my work laptop. Does anyone thing they were well enough to do that?

I can also do 6 weeks of short term disability.

I was off for four weeks then when I went back light duty not able to lift anything over 10 pounds six weeks totally clear , hey folks take your time don’t rush back to work! Not only the physical part but the mental part as far as adjusting to what you will be eating and what you can’t eat. wishing everyone health and happiness !

I can really see the difference in your face! I am so happy for you!

I'm pre-op for vsg and my doctor told me plan on two weeks. I'm going to see how I feel after one week and take it from there.

My job is off and on labor intensive so I have to see what my schedule is like. If it's an office week it should be ok for me.

That said, if you had the PTO to cover it and/or the time and benefits available, I think I'd take the max.

Some say it's easier than healing from a C-section. I was up taking walks around my neighborhood by 1.5-2 weeks with that. I feel like it took me about 3-4 weeks to feel like a real functioning human and like 8+ weeks before I felt like my old self.

Good luck on your journey.

I did 4 weeks so that I was close to the toilet until my body was adjusted to everything and it was the perfect amount of time to see what I could and could not tolerate as far as foods and what would put me in the bathroom. It really is a personal decision but I think your body needs that to recover from a major surgery. I also know it depends on how much your covered financially for missing work. I only got paid 70% while I was out, but it was worth it to come back to work and know that I wouldn’t have to run to the bathroom and have a routine on my meals.
I am off of work for 2 weeks, but then on light duty for another 6 weeks. I work on the admission ward of a psych hospital on a forensic unit, and have to be prepared to deal with assaultive patients. My best friend took 6 weeks total off of full duty at work, and the day she got back she was kicked in the stomach.

There is no “right” answer to how long you should take off work. It very much depends on the activity level of your job.

Each of us has a unique situation and set of circumstances. I have a sedentary job and went back after two weeks. I walk to work, about five blocks, which was exhausting a couple of times. That being said, if I was 20 or 30 years younger, I think I may have had a bit more energy and pep in my step! I felt physically fine after two weeks, but low energy. Good luck to you on your journey!
