I have read that fertility often spikes post-surgery (especially when you have PCOS like I do.) However, I am not on the plan to have children and I'm trying to consider my next steps. I'd like to reach out to my gyno and see about birth control options. I was on the pill before, but I am a little curious about the arm implant and the IUD. What has been everyone's experience?

Just had my IUD removed after 5 years. Loved it. I did have about 2 months of spotting after getting it and then hardly any periods until this year, not sure if it was WL or that it was getting old but I’m getting another in 2 weeks!! Love it

I have pcos. I'm 4 months postop and those symptoms have come back full force. 47 yrs old with a tubal and back on bc pills due to either that time of the month or spotting daily since October

I used to have the Mirena IUD and absolutely LOVED IT! I never got my period so it was wonderful. Unfortunately it was time to have it removed earlier this year and my GYN said I was too old to get a new one (I’m 52). So guess what?? Now I get my period like a teenager - cramps and all. It sucksssss!

I have the mirena and absolutely love it! Im on my 3rd one and highly recommend it. No periods and lasts 5 years.

The Mirena IUD seems like a really solid idea.

It may be worth checking with your surgeon, too. Mine said that that pill isn't as effective post-surgery (something about absorption, even with the sleeve - I admittedly didn't listen too closely because I can't take the pill).

I'm taking it just for regulating cycles but if I was still able to get pregnant I'd def look into implants or shots. Don't you have to "check" the iud periodically?

My ob Dr checks the strings during my annual visit. No other checks needed

I wonder if it is an insurance coverage issue? If it was just your OB's opinion, I'd be changing OB's

I have Mirena. I've had Mirena for 5 years now. The first 4 years I had it, I loved it and had NO PERIODS YAYYYYY. I got it taken out when I was diagnosed with pseudotumor because apparently levonogesterol can cause that, but decided eff it and had it put back in last October. I've had random one day sporadic periods once in a while. It's annoying because there is no rhyme or reason to it, other than it seems to happen when I am under a LOT of stress. I got a random one day period pre-op back in July... but have had 4 random one/two day periods since surgery 11/1. My hormones are overtaking the IUD's power. lol.
BUT, still much less annoying than dealing with a period on a regular basis. You do not have to check the IUD periodically. The OBGYN can see it at your annual visits. I recommend it to everyone.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY MIRENA IUD. I got my first one 12 years ago after I had my oldest and then was in grad school
When I graduated 3yrs later I had it removed and got preggo with my twins..since then I had another MIRENA put back in..my twins are 8 now..I have never had a period while on the Mirena. Insertion is a little painful but bearable. I dont have to remember to take a pill..the strings at first were a little long and (ex) hubby could fell them so my dr trimmed the string..perfect ever since[emoji4]

Another Mirena IUD user here, and I love it. I've had mine for 2 years, no periods (just a little spotting here and there). I keep kicking myself for not going that route sooner.

I have the Kyleena IUD. It sucked getting it inserted and my periods are just now (7 months later) returning to kinda normal... but no pregnancies so I guess I’d call it a success!

I finally had an appointment with my gyno today and we both decided on the Kyleena IUD. I have to wait until my next period (which could be whenever) and I'll go ahead and get it scheduled. Very excited!

My NP advised against the Depo-Provera as the progestrin can sometimes be an appetite stimulant, but was very encouraging towards the IUD.

I also have PCOS, so I wasn't on BC before surgery. I just recently had my yearly well-woman appointment and decided to get on BC again since I don't want another child any time soon- if at all. I only have one, but I'm happy with that. My original intent was to get the arm implant because I had a bad experience with the IUD a couple years ago, but she said they see more weight gain with the arm implant and the Depo shot than they do with the pill. So I decided to go with the pill.
