Hello, I gained 35 pounds since my surgery over two years ago. If anyone has regained and loss again, please give me some pointers.

Im in the process of getting rid of my regain. I am just going back to basics. Getting rid of all the excess unnecessary junk and sweets. Drinking more Water, less carbs and just following the rules. Its hard at first but honestly it gets easier by the day. You just have to get rid of temptation in your home. Do some research to reacquaint yourself with the basic rules. Take more steps every day. Im trying to go back to my hour long walks. It's a process. Im a little over 2yrs and i find that i actually like my intolerances lol. They stop me from making bad choices.

I agree with Torriluv. I am only two weeks out and cannot speak from experience, but all I have read from the nutritionist on our support page for veterans is to go back to basics and cut the carbs.

Hi @Netty1967

It would be great to know a bit about you! There is a place you can enter details about your surgery, weight before, weight at lowest etc. then we get a good sense of that journey, and I think are better equipped to walk with you on this one.

Assuming your sleeve was successful, you reached goal weight? So you did it before. You know what made it work. And then - what has changed? Because there is your issue!

You have done this before, you can do it again! Talk to us about your history, your current habits.....

I’m 21 mos. out and have only gained 5 pounds but I’m scared to death that I will gain more. food wise I don’t eat a lot. It’s the snacking. Be a I can eat more of that I tend to choose those things when I’m hungry so I’ve decided to cut out the unhealthy snacking and go to Protein Shakes when I’m hungry in between meals and hopefully that will do it for me. Time will tell. I would like a buddy that is 18 or more months out from surgery that is going through this as well

I'm going back to basics with the new year. I didn't gain, but I did indulge myself and now I need to keep my healthy habits going. I did my walk early this morning and I am on my 4th glass of Water. I am caring for myself again. I am worth the effort. 🐵

Hi @mebal

Just introducing Protein Shakes won’t help unless it is part of a wider plan - but if you mean “will it work if I adopt this plan: going back to watching my eating carefully, sticking to 120p calories, using Protein shakes to ensure I get 80g protein, ditching my ‘junky’ food and having treats sensibly, and picking up my exercise” then YES!

You will often see advice for retainers here about going back to basics. But 10lb gain isn’t too bad - seems to me not at the ‘start back at your original plan at day 1’ regain. But it is time to arrest the slide, put that same effort that worked so well in 2016 - it worked then and it will work again!

Good on you for coming here, posting, looking for advice. You got this!!

gained 10 pounds

Recently I gained six pounds. I was sleeved 16 months ago. I have a threshold weight that I use as my weight barometer. Once I get to that weight I know I'm in the danger zone. For me the weight is 160lbs. I went to 162lbs. My first goal was to find out what to attribute the weight gain to. So, I poured over my food diaries and found that I was making fruit smoothies. It seems that the fruit smoothies caused the weight gain. I stopped the fruit smoothies and started on a plan to loose the weight. Since I don't go to the gym I needed to incorporate some form of physical activity into my day. I live in a high-rise building and decided to walk the 12 flights of stairs instead of taking the elevator. I also increased my Water intake and cut out my after dinner snack. I'm glad to say that I lost seven pounds and I'm down to 155lbs.

20 years ago I lost close to 70lbs but I never set a threshold weight. So when I would gain six pounds it wasn't urgent for me to lose it. Subsequently those six pounds turned to 15 pounds then to 30 pounds until I regained the 70 pounds and then some. For me, I need to set a threshold weight so that I know I'm in danger.

Thanks for your response and congrats on your additional weight loss. That was my intent as well. I gave myself a limit of no more than 5 lbs. which I’m at, so I’ve started looking at what I have been eating and have cut out the unhealthy Snacks. Thanks again and keep up the good work. It is truly a continuous struggle and lifestyle change.

I did the reset, I’m going back to basic of three meals a day no more than 8oz and a supplement for in between. It works, I lost 9lbs.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
