Endoscopy- Waived or not?

So my appointment with the surgeon has been moved up! I now meet with her next week, and I've already been given the green light by the nutritionist. My main concern is that I have not had the Endoscopy. However there is a possibility I won't need it? They use it to check for Barrett's Esophagus, but since I have NO issues with acid reflux/heartburn or anything like that, my nutritionist said they may most likely waive it. Has anyone proceeded without the endoscopy?

  • The doctors are actually recommending it because many people start having signs at age 40. Insurance recommends 50 to save them money. My husband had stage 3 cancer and ended up with a permanent colo

It was a requirement of the bariatric program at the hospital I used so every patient has to have one regardless of your history. I'm sure there can be a difference with all programs.

Seems that no two places are the same. A few others I've talked to all mentioned having to do the barium swallow, but that doesn't appear to be a requirement at Mount Auburn. If I do need it, hopefully I can get it asap so it won't push the surgery back too far. But its better to be safe than sorry!

I wish you all the best! This was the best decision I have ever made! Hugs!

Same to you! How far along in the process are you?

Thamks! I had surgery 7/272017 and since that day I have lost 125lbs. My total weight loss is 148 because I lost 23lbs prior to surgery.

Damn! You are on fire! Your account said Pre-Op so I assumed you were beginning too!

I just signed up today and I didn't change all of that. I need to fix it.

Oh! Well WELCOME! You've had such amazing success, I wouldn't say no to any advice you may wish to share!

I never had one

I had it and a bunch of other stuff lol but my surgeon did say since I had a history of reflux and never had an endoscopy done before that was his process. Good luck I'm scheduled for May 23rd surgery so maybe we will be in same month :-)
