Going on 20 years post op

Recommended Posts

My problems began about 12 years post op (received bypass in 1999) when I started to binge eat and my weight has been like a yo-yo varying between 10 to 20 lbs over my desired weight. While I always manage to get my weight down close to my desired weight I'm finding it more difficult to accomplish this. I tried all the traditional weight loss plans (WeightWatchers, Jennie Craig,, etc.) and nothing seemed to work.

PLEASE HELP

Sherry

Hello, I apologize but I am not going to be able to give you any advice because I am just a little over 6 months out. But I have to say several things! One congratulations on how well you are doing this far out! SERIOUSLY! And second you are giving me inspiration because me gaining everything back is one of the things that makes me worry. The fact that you are 20 years out and are only having issues with 10-20 pounds gives me some hope! If you are really seeking advice I can only say to try going to your surgeons office and asking them for some advice.....I know that my surgeon has weekly meetings and groups that attempt to help people in situations like what you are experiencing. Good luck and thank you for the hope that you just gave me! :D

Sherry, hope I'm not out of line here but it seems that you're pretty much a success as far as weight loss goes. Fluctuating between 10-20lbs after 19yrs doesn't look so bad. From what I read and experienced many not only gain their original weightless back and then some. You're right on point to be on top of the weight gain and to lose it but overall kudos to you for doing such a good job.

I know 20 lbs doesn't seem like a lot relatively speaking, but 20 lbs over your target weight is a significant amount. I'm sorry about your cravings to binge eat. I COMPLETELY hear you there. I am worried about this very issue myself. If this were happening to me, I'd probably have to talk to a therapist about my eating and join a support group. It sounds like you know all the right things to do and you're successful when you put your mind to it. It's just keeping those binge/craving sessions at bay.

I see these commercials for a prescription medication that controls cravings (by altering hormones or neurotransmitters?) for people who are overweight. I wonder if in the history of gastric bypass that there exists any person who is also taking a prescription med to control cravings. That would be interesting to know.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
