Go to another room or take a walk outside. Haven't had surgery but when people eat watermelon around me that's my response. It actually nauseates me and I have to leave before I upchuck.

Will your doctor allow you to chew gum? Drink extra Fluid, one of my doctors says often when you think you're hungry, you're thirsty.

Chewing is a biological response and it's normal to want to chew. BUT DON'T give in to that. Go read a book, do paint-by-number, take a shower, talk a walk, (make someone else put all the leftovers away). This will pass and you can do this, it's not that much time it just feels like it. Hang in there.
