New guy here, just found the website this week and I've been reading many threads. I contacted a gastric doctor two months ago and found out about two weeks ago that my insurance will cover 100% after a six month doctor supervised nutrition program. My first visit with the doctor is on April 6th to learn more. I've looked at many, many post op menu's and that scares me. I like to eat! and just recently fell in love with cooking on a Big Green Egg, so I'm still a little on the fence with all of this about not being able to enjoy life after, plus I like a glass of wine (or two) at night to unwind. ;) My wife is not really on board with it as well, and has the typical skinny person thought - just eat less and exercise more. My primary doctor put it bluntly when I asked his opinion about weight loss surgery with a response of "nothing has worked for you in 47 years has it?" I've tried many weight loss programs and two things worked for me, Metabolic and a weight loss competition at the Gym. I lost 42 pounds with MRC and 26 with the gym both getting down to about 230-240, now at 315 later. The gym was hard aerobic exercise twice a day and weight training for an hour - I wish I had time to keep that schedule up - and I did lose fat and gain muscle but really felt let down after four months that my waist only went down three inches (currently squeezing into size 44 jeans) and could barely get into a 40.

My neighbor had gastric by pass about ten years ago has gone from 330 to about 160, and is the only person I've know to have the surgery, and I would be ecstatic to be back to 160-180, as would my wife. Does everyone have lose skin post surgery? Do some have skin shrinkage or is skin surgery years down the road happen to everyone?

My main motivation is to hopefully ensure that I live long enough to see my kids grow up. The thought of not being a part of my eight year old daughter's wedding (when ever that would be) really scares me.

Anyways, just checking in to say hi and go back to reading. I'm sure I will have more questions soon!

Hello and welcome!

I too was afraid to do the surgery because I love to eat as well. Also like you, I'm a big Kamado fan! But at weighing in over 320 pounds and high blood pressure I decided I had played Russian Roulette with my health long enough.

I started the program in January 2017 and had my surgery October 10th 2017. The first 6 to 8 weeks after surgery were the toughest. Not because I was hungry, but I was just tired of shakes and Soups. I really never even thought of food, I just ate because I had too. A few months after surgery , you will be able to use your Big Green Egg again. You can even have a glass of wine. I am a huge beer fan. I live in a state that is huge in brewery's. I will say I miss beer, but I love feeling better, stronger and yes, thinner. I do notice my skin is more loose, but you know, If I need to have surgery at some point, I can cross that bridge when the time I see right.

Hey, Steve. I weighed 397 pounds when I started this journey. I lost 100 pounds during the six month insurance required pre-op diet program, and got to a 180 pound goal at 1 year and 4 Days post-op. I have been maintaining at 170-173 for months.

It is the best thing that you can do for yourself IF you are willing to put in the work. I could care less about food now. I eat to live and that’s it. I find pleasure in so many other things. (Wine being one of them, so don’t worry about that...)

Best wishes moving forward. Surgery can change your life if you want it enough.

Welcome aboard! Use the 6 months supervised program to examine your relationship with food. This is major surgery and permanent - but that's what you want - a real solution that helps KEEP the weight off.

Follow the plan and you will be fine. Check the surgical options - I chose the VSG and am very happy with it. I am not craving food, I enjoy what I eat but no longer controlled by it. Take your wife to an info mtg so she can here about the metabolic differences obesity causes in our bodies and how the surgery gives us a better chance at success.

I did this for my family, to BE THERE until I'm 80 or 90! Genetics are against me, so although this may seem extreme, it was a chance I was willing to take. I'm only 3 weeks post-op, but I will say that surgery changed how I think about food. I see my son's birthday cake on the counter and I KNOW it would feel like a punch in the stomach if I ate it! Lol! Sounds brutal, but it works to avoid things that are not on the menu! Good luck in your choice!!

If you feel it's right for you, do it. It's the best decision I've made for myself. Honestly, this decision was the first time I put myself first in years. When I was second guessing having the surgery the psychologist leading the weight loss support group that I attended asked me why do I think out of all the times I've tried to lose weight on my own before and failed this time would be different? It was said in a nice way, but it was a verbal slap upside the head that I needed to get me to realize I really needed to take a step like this to get healthy. I wouldn't change this decision for anything. It has changed my life for the better.

I'm glad you are going to do this. I'm going to have my surgery because I have,lived long enough with a tired body. I'm 72 and,can see not making it until,75, let alone the 88 I aspire to. I want to live in a stronger healthier body. If I get my cute back, well goody for my side. But i don't,want,to,live fat, with joints that hurt, no endurance and chronically puffing and wheezing through what time I have,left,on earth. I find the thought of surgery less frightening then the existance I have now.

      So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

        It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

      I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

        I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

      How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

        Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

        I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

        I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

        I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

      Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again. 
      I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent. 
      I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

      Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
      For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
      For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
      Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
      Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
      It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
