Phlegm

Hello everybody!

Anybody feel phlegm in their throats after surgery?

I've been doing the exercises they told me to do at the hospital and it hurts to cough. I'm terrified of getting pneumonia.

Any thoughts?

  • Yes! I experienced a little phlegm. I hate using the spirometer, but I force myself to at least once during the day. I know we are supposed to do more.

You are right Iona. The intubation tube can cause some irritation on your throat. I should go away in a few days.

Phew! Thank you! I thought it was only me. I use the spirometer several times a day, maybe 6 or so... I can feel the phlegm there I just can't seem to cough hard enough to spit it out. It hurts my big insicion when I cough.

Me too! My personal opinion is that, at least in my case, it's exacerbated by the high amounts of dairy I'm taking in with my protein shakes. Also, I think there's likely to be irritation in the throat from the tubes.

I try to see it as a positive thing. I have to sip constantly or I cough, so it's a good reminder. As you say, coughing hurts!
