I've been set on having a sleeve since I made the decision to have surgery.I don't have my first appointment with my surgeon until Feb. 3rd.I know its his decision on which one he thinks is better for me..Bypass makes me nervous, ( I think it's the whole re-routing thing)Has anyone have this happen? This has really been on my mind today. I've done so much research on the sleeve and hardly any on the bypass.Hope everyone is having a blessed day!

It's not your surgeon's decision. It's yours. Certainly, your surgeon should have an opinion and advice to offer, but ultimately you get to make the choice. Is there any reason to believe your surgeon would strongly push you towards bypass over sleeve?

No not really.I have blood pressure,lupus, high cholesterol. .my b.m.i.is 48..but I dont have any reflux , gerd or anything like that.My sister brought the question up as we are doing this together and had me really thinking about it..Thank you for replying. .

You should definitely listen to him and all of his reasoning. Hopefully it will be a non-issue and you are worrying needlessly. But if he does think, for whatever reason, that bypass is a better option for you, then hopefully you can weigh his reasoning carefully against your own thoughts and reservations and make the best decision for yourself.

I too am not sure which surgery to have. i wanted the sleeve but my surgeon told me he thinks the bypass will be better for me as i tend to crave sweet stuff. i am also very nervous about having my innards moved around. I asked him why the sleeve is more popular and he said that it seems more straight forward than bypass and surgeons like doing the sleeve as its quicker, but in reality, its a very similar operation, short term risks are the same for both, known long term risk of sleeve is weight regain. for bypass its a twist in the bowel (though not so common- 2%) which will need surgery to fix,also nutritional deficiency is more likely in bypass than sleeve. you have to take the same amount of Vitamins for life, forgetting to take them once in a while will affect you more with the bypass than sleeve. Bypass has better long term results whereas with the sleeve 20% will not get the results they want mainly due to their genetic makeup. End of the day the choice is mine, my surgeon says i am a good candidate for both but recommends bypass for optimal results.He told me i can let him know which procedure i want on the morning of surgery, so i have till 16 March to decide!!

So glad to see Im not the only one.Im gonna go ahead and do more research on bypass that way if it does come come up with my surgeon Ill be able to make an informed decision. .Newme 17, it doesn't give me those options on the app just shades it blue

My doctor does something like 85 % sleeves and 15 % bypass... I remember him saying he usually just dos bypass for people with throat issues or reflux etc.

Did he say what the sweets had to do with the choice? I was told with bypass you have a higher chance of dumping syndrome when you eat sweets. But it can happen with the sleeve as well.

This is your decision. I was just like you, I was of the mind set of having the sleeve. I was 232 5'4, until the day before I saw the surgeon. My daughter had a friend that had the bypass she came over and asked me a few questions that changed my mind.

1) do you want to be off your diabetic meds immediately? my answer was yes

2) Do you want to lose the most weight? My answer was yes

3) there is a long history with the pass and not so long with the sleeve, which would you rather do? It truly made me thing and I decided if I was going to lose this weight I was going for the gold.

My surgery was on 11/9/16. It has not been a walk in the park but I am down 53 pounds. Off my med immediately, my joints do not hurt when I get up. I still am not hungry and only eat 1 or 2 forkfuls of protein times a day.

This has to be your decision and no one else. You are the one that has to do it. Good luck hope my reply helps.

Yes! Thank you so much..When my sister brought the question up. (We are doing this together )I asked her what she would do and without hesitation she said...have the bypass! I've come to the conclusion that I've made this choice to be a healthier me and as long as I achieve that I'll take whatever road that is necessary .

Patticake74 I can totally understand being torn. I am in the same boat.

My Doctor told me he would do whichever one I want, sleeve or bypass. He said I was a good candidate for either, but if he was me he'd do the sleeve. The nurse thought I'd be better off with the bypass. I think she felt this way because I am either diabetic or prediabetic (waiting for my recent lab work to come in to hopefully get a final answer). I think that I have binged on sweets in the past played into her opinion. I really want to get the bypass, but am hesitant because I think there are more risk. I feel there is an increase in the chance of a leak, because of more cutting and sewing. I also I think their is a higher chance of malabsorption, possibly higher risk of gallstones, and I can't remember what else. I sort of feel like I am being selfish by wanting to have the bypass. But I feel it is the better choice weight loss wise. You lose more weight with the bypass, lower chance of gaining weight back, and because of dumping I will be more afraid to cheat and eat a sweet.

I wanted to have the bypass but my surgeon wouldn't do a bypass on me because I had a HUGE incisional hernia from a prior cancer surgery. I was upset that he was only going to do the sleeve because I knew RNY was the gold standard (his words) AND I wanted to lose the most weight possible.

Almost 5 months out (1/31/17), and I've already lost 86 pounds since being sleeved on 8/31/16. Because of this tool, I was finally able to have my incisional hernia repaired on 1/3/17.

Bottom line, listen to your surgeon's recommendation but if you do have the sleeve, I've been very happy with mine :-).
