Because I'm thinking to do the surgery myself. And it's terrifying yet excitment at the same time.

Maybe this is the hundred time someone asked this question.

But does waking up after surgery hurt and what was the pain level??

My surgical pain was controlled by pain meds. Many people talk about how painful it is to have the gas from surgery, which was used to expand your abdomen, as it settles in your chest, neck, shoulders and back. The only way to relieve the pressure is to walk, burp and pass gas. Some say it dissipates in 3 days to a week. I was fortunate to not have that. Once I got home, I took my pain meds 1X. I am 2 1/2 weeks post op now. I still have incision pain on the right side but it's not intolerable. My biggest problem wasn't pain but more nausea.

Everyone has a different experience. I did not experience any pain or nausea. All was controlled by meds. When I woke up, I was just a little disoriented but soon was awake and watching tv. Went off pain meds at home after 2 days and only experienced soreness from biggest incision area. For me, it was worth the risk of pain.

The most important part is working to get in fluids and Protein the first week. Following doctors orders is key.

You won't know until you wake up. Everyone's tolerance is different and surgical techniques differ, and perioperative medications and anesthesia protocols are different. These all influence pain. Some people experience severe pain and are on IV pumps in the hospital for 2-3 days and go home on narcotics and are in pain for days (or weeks). I woke up with zero surgical pain. Zero gas pain. Zero nausea. I was never given pain meds postop and didn't go home with any. I was out sightseeing in sunny Tijuana the day after my surgery.

They cut a portion of your body out and to get to it they cut through multiple layers of skin, fat and muscle. OF COURSE IT HURTS! lol. Be vocal about your pain and they will address it with pain meds during your hospital stay. I went home the day after and took my pain meds the next 3 days. I was very surprised at how fast the pain was going away as opposed to my surgeries in the past. I was up and moving with minimal pain. So does it hurt? Sure. Is it worth every bit of it? ABSOLUTELY!

I'll tell you what doesn't hurt anymore, my back and knees when I walk or shop or do anything with my kids. I'm only 50 lbs down and 2 months 3 weeks post op but I am feeling more confident, more active, energetic and more healthy. It is worth every bit of it. Do your research on the surgery and make your decision but Don't let the pain part be your deciding factor because the reward is so much greater than the price.

There's a bit of surgical pain post-op, but now that I'm months out, I don't look back and think "wow. that surgery was painful". I took my pain meds for 7 days, which kept me mobile and I really had no issues with pain other than when I first woke up in the PACU, which was quickly dealt with.

Thank you so much for all ya'all replies. It makes me more confident and relaxed. On 8 dec i have my first appointment with my surgeon.

I have ZERO pain threshold and I did just fine. They did pump me full of pain meds, of course. After I came home I found I was ok with the occasional ibuprofen.

Like Gustavio said, I found most of my pain going away after surgery as my feet and back don't constantly ache from so much extra weight. It's worth it!

I hurt pretty bad but I had the VGS, Gallbladder removal and huge hernia repair. My surgery was long and my recovery will be about 8 weeks. I was in a great deal of pain and was constantly hitting the pain meds button. When I left the hospital the ride home was nearly unbearable. I had to extend my liquid vicodin use to 2 weeks instead of 1,

I am in my 6th week now and I'm finally feeling like a normal human again. I'm on soft foods and transitioning to moist, whole chicken. Super excited. I'm starting to feel really good about this but I went through a few really rough Patches and a few weeks of total regret. Thank god I'm coming out of it and normalizing!! Pain was there but I hope that it will be a distant memory soon and all I will be feeling is joy at my new life.

My surgery was two days ago, and I would say I experienced more "discomfort" than pain. That's probably because of all the drugs they had me on, though! The nurse would come in every couple of hours and ask, "On a scale of 1-10, how bad is your pain?" It was rarely over 3 or 4, but she gave me some painkillers every time, just to prevent more pain from hitting me. I was sore on my right side (because I had the sleeve; the bypass would make you sore on your left side) but I asked for an ice pack, and that helped a lot.

Honestly, my nausea was worse than my pain. I had a really bad time with the nausea, but not everyone experiences that. It made for a pretty miserable night after surgery. Dairymary up there, that lucky heifer, had NO nausea! Just depends on you and your body!

I'm on day 3, and I haven't even taken any of my strong pain meds today; only Tylenol.

You honestly won't know until you go through it, but have faith in those hospital drugs. That's some good stuff!

Also at least for me, there was really any pain from the incessions themselves. At least not the sharp pain we associate with being cut. Rather the closest thing is what it feels like to get a really deep bruise. Im 2 weeks out and only have very minor pain and only if I bend down too low.

I had my surgery in Mexico. I woke up, the pain wasn't bad at all. I felt like I had tried to do a lot of situps, best way I can describe it. I remember having a constant feeling that I was about to gag or throw up. The nurse kept me filled with anti nausea medication and pain meds. I flew in on Tuesday, surgery on Wednesday back home by Friday back to work that Monday.

I had a drain tube in my stomach. They took it out two days later. Over all the pain wasn't bad.

Personally not at all I had the bypass rny I went home the next day. Back to work three days later. I'm less then a week out and I feel wonderful alittle sore when bending but that's it!!! Gl

Every time I wake up from a surgery I am beyond miserable, I don't do well coming off the anesthesia. That being said, the pain was not that bad and as soon as I came out of the haze they gave me pain meds and it was fine. The gas pain was the worst in my chest but I took some gas X and it passed pretty fast. The first night I had nausea and they switched me to a stronger med and no problem.

I went home the next day, stopped my oral pain meds on day 3, and only occasionally take a pill for nausea now. I think that for most people it's not a very painful experience.

As long as you're honest with your team and you are working with reputable people they will stay on top of your concerns!

I'm not good with pain and the pain medication really helps. You will be very unhappy for a few weeks and then, it will be better every day.
