Why Protein Shakes?

I am pre-op gastric bypass. Like most of you here, since I came to the decision to have surgery I have been studying and reading everything I can to learn what to expect. I have taken steps to change how I eat and understand how food effects me. I have lost 35 lbs so far from healthy eating. One of the steps was to cut out sugar from my diet except for a rare treat I allow myself once a month or less. During my scheduled meet with my NUT she told me I need to start using protein shakes to replace a meal. I told her that I was kicking sugar and would rather get my extra protein through an unflavored whey that I could put in my water or food. She said no, no good. Drink the shakes. I am stumped as to why a sugary protein shake is so superior?? Could someone enlighten me?

I have found no sugar shakes or verylow sugar sahkes, and even a protein drink called lift by Atkins. It has helped me a lot as I can not have any food right now.

I will look into those no sugar shakes. Are they not sweet at all? What is the flavor?
Yes, they do taste sweet, strawberry and chocolate or vanilla. I would prefer something savory but nothing has the same level of protein in liquid form.

unjury chicken soup flavor may not sound like a good protein Shake but it's delicious and you don't have to deal with that sweet taste.
