Post op discomfort

I am two days post op (Aug 9) and I knew I was going to be a bit uncomfortable but didn't realise how little I would be able to eat (drink! Liquid only at mo) without feeling uncomfortable. After two or three teaspoons I seem to get this tight uncomfortable feeling in my chest. Is this normal? I'm worried that I am not giving my body enough to heal itself.:help:

I found that the two tablespoons of loratab was more than enough to fill me up. It was thicker than water. So I waited a while before I started sipping my water again. I would call the doctor if you are concerned. It doesn't hurt to ask them.

I think you should call the dr as well, but it sounds like gas to me - makes you feel like you are having a heart attack. I had pain in my chest, also in my shoulder - walk, walk, walk, gas-x, walk, walk, walk, and if all else fails use some liquid tylenol or your pain meds.

After a week or two you will feel great!

Good Luck and hope your discomfort passes soon for you!

what is loratab?

OMG I felt exactly like you do. I could barely drink anything. If I took my Tylenol w/ Codeine then I felt really full for a while. I was so restricted that I stopped taking my meds just because I wanted to get actual food (clear soup) in my stomach without it filling up so soon. It gets better. I also had so much gas that I felt like everything I was drinking was making the gas worse my spit was even frothy. I walked around and I tried Gas X and it helped alot. What was worse was my breath..because I wasn't eating any carbs for so long I had this strange smell to my breath that would NOT go away regardless of how much I brushed my teeth. I guess it was my body going into ketonosis or however you spell it. If you are really nervous I would call the general surgeon on call or the nurse. I called them like 6 times the first week and everything was normal. GOOD LUCK!

After the 5th day or so it seems to get much better. I am now 8 days post-op I still have discomfort but nothing like the first couple of days. My surgery was on Friday August 3rd and two days after I actually got on the treadmill for a 30 minute walk. The walking seems to help with the gas also. Monday I went to work and took it easy and pretty much coasted through the week. Today is Saturday and I feel much better. Good luck..

Also a quick note I stopped taking pain killers on Sunday night. No Codine or any over the counters with the exception of Gas X. I did have trouble sleeping Mon-Thurs but thats gotten better also.

Hi All-

Newly banded on the 7th and I'm feeling SO BAD I'm almost regretting this. I can't get anything down due to the gas but have nauseau b/c i can't get anything down. Feeling week and he pain in my chest is killing me!! I'm glad to hear it get's better ... but when??

What you guys were/are experiencing is absolutely normal. I don't think I drank much of anything for the first two days after surgery. You have a general feeling that there is a big glove surrounding your food canal and squeezing. That's your body going "WHOA! What's THIS!" to the band, and trying to heal. Everything feels tender after surgery, and this is no exception. About 2 weeks out you will really start to feel human again. A couple of things you will experience to a great extent probably for the first time though are (1) you will burp....a LOT....this is GREAT. You're getting rid of the air they pump into you for surgery...that's the gas you feel crawling around inside you and generally settling PAINFULLY up in your shoulder, neck, etc.... (2) you will....uh....fart....a LOT. Get used to ducking into other rooms or stepping outside of a building...by the way, I didn't notice much, if any smell at all (TMI, I know...but as long as we are getting things in the open....) (3) you will GROWL and I mean GROWL a LOT and LOUD. The growlies are amazing. Kindof feels like an earthquake in your tummy. Growlies will be a part of your life pretty much from now on (I call it my Beast....it tells me when it needs something put in to shut it up) and was something as a fat person I had never experienced (who waits long enough for your stomach to growl before feeding it....ha! Not ME!). The audible growlies seemed to have lessened after my first month or so, but I still growl about every three hours or so, just not so people across the room can hear anymore! HAHAHA!

You're getting towards time when things will lessen a bit. You HAVE to concentrate on getting some quality liquids down though. You should be taking liquids ALL DAY LONG constantly. TINY TINY TINY sips if necessary....if you don't, you will continue to feel like CRAP and continue to be nauseated. And WALK...I cannot stress that enough, and I am dead serious about this....you will feel EONS better if you walk and walk a lot. Walk in the house...I did "laps" around the house for days. Every time you get up to go to the bathroom or whatever, take a complete tour of your house....or if it's not big enough, walk outside to the end of the driveway or something like that. I found when I walked...got up, moved around...EVERYTHING felt better. You are still just HEALING. That vise-like grip in your chest will start to abate...but you HAVE to be very gentle with it. You need to try to get something with a little protein in it down. I have found Isopure DRINKS (the clear drinks, premade in a bottle) are GREAT. You can get them at a health food store or on line. (Not the stuff you mix up...it's like fruit drink, koolaid, etc.). They have about 8 flavors. You can water them down a little if it is too sweet, but I am NOT a sweet eater and they are not bad to me. The protein will give you strength and stop that nausea and the liquid will hydrate you.

Also....if you have pain meds...TAKE them. That is what they are there for! I took my pain meds relgiously for two weeks. There is NO reason for you to be "suffering" anymore than necessary and that's why the doctors give you those meds. Pain meds should be taken automatically at this time....don't wait until you hurt. The idea is to keep that hurt at bay...if you have a hard time taking pain meds (sensitive), take SMALL amounts of it and follow with liquids, soup, etc.

loratab is a painkiller.. Hydrocodone is the same thing.

OK - thanks. I wonder if that is the same as tylenol with codein. I have to tell the doctor not to give me codein or vicoden because i am seriously allergic to those.

thanks again

I am 6 days out and had a rough start getting in liguids. Got so bad Sat

a dehydration fever tried to set in. Thats when I got scared and called Dr. She said childrens morin to reduce fever and switch to all clear liquids. Started drinking a lot of isopure. Fever was down in no time at all. She also asked if I had sinus drainage. Yes I did. The light bulb went on and now Im taking Clariniton D I fell so much better.

Ok, I'm out 5 days, and the gas pains sit right in the chest, but if I get up and walk it feels a little bit better, the liquids are starting to go down easier for me, I lot hot decaf tea and chicken broth with some Mrs. Dash to spice it up. Ice cold water hurts the chest to much. But I believe the walking is what is the key! I go back to work on Tuesday, sit at a desk all day, so I told them I need to get up every hour and walk.

becka, I too am 2 days post op and can drink very little. I was worried about the amount of time I spend sleeping although today it seems to be a bit better. I was very weak this morning but have taken 2 glasses of gastrolyte. That seems to have helped. Are you having this problem?
