Sleeve or band

I'm one weigh in away and I'm trying to decide between the sleeve or the band. When I initially started the process I wanted the band. But after speaking with my PCP, friends that's have done weight loss surgeries and general research. I decided on the sleeve. My surgeon is saying now to the band because I've been having problems with acid reflux. My personal thought at first was, he knows what's best, but ultimately I feel that the band will be an inconvenience, and lessen my weight loss goals. I'm new here, and welcome any thoughts, advice etc... thanks

I had the band for 2 years and had to have it out due to slipping and cutting off blood supply to my stomach. Took me almost 10 years to get my sleeve because of the fear I had about my experience wit

My mother had the band, and it was a disaster: lots of problems: acid actually damaged the band, she would throw up quite often, etc. She went from the band to the sleeve and now she is happy with it.

  • My surgeon rarely performs the band - he won't outright refuse to do it, but told me he's put in about 3-5 over the last year and removed 20-30 due to complications or ineffectiveness. He also said he

I just came back from my one week post op band removal im doing fine i feel great exept for the first few days with gas and a little muscle pain. im back to feeling normal.. My sleeve is still scheduled for May 24th i tried to get it moved up by my doctor but he was really struggling with moving it up to six weeks instead of 7 that i am scheduled for. Reason he said was that my band and stomach was in terrible shape. he showed me a diagram of a stomach and band and how the band had slipped and part of my stomach was squeezed leaving like a balloon shape up top of the band deforming my stomach so he insisted on the 7 week that i was scheduled for and i hands up said you know best . so May 24th is it.. the only thing i have to repeat is my clearance and blood work because that is the only thing that expires after one month .. i already scheduled that for early may so now im just going to wait patiently and try to lose 13 lbs by may 24th.

How long do you have to make up your mind . I hope all works well for you no matter what surgery you choose..

My final weigh-in is May 3rd. I'm going to let him know then that I've decided on the sleeve. Between the stories here and then general research I believe it's best to do the sleeve. I also see how many people are having problems getting approval for revision surgeries, I rather avoid that problem.

I'm hoping for a quick approval approved a date for the middle/end of May.

I definitely will still be doing research. I want to be as prepared as possible and this is a great tool for that. How's your recovery going?

I feel great just cant wait for my sleeve surgery but im still a bit swollen as expected and i know i have to wait for surgery date. But what i did do today is look into a therapist that deals with eating disorders, emotional eating and WLS. i have my first appoointment with her on may 4th im excited to see if together with the wls i will never gain weight again,, i owe it to myself its time for me to focus on me. My kids are grown and my husband is very supportive of all this even the second time around so its time..

That's awesome. To be honest, no one seems to get why I'm doing this. They live in this strange land where being 100+ pounds overweight is fine...meanwhile it's a struggle to shop, eat, walk, talk, put shoes on and stairs forget that. I actually had my ex tell me if I did it he would never speak to me again. I beat him to the punch and just left. Lol...my daughter is supportive at 6 years old, wants me to be skinny again.

It's great you have the support and found the therapist. I have one and she's just the best thing ever on tough days.

I am counting down until the 3rd, we get to submit then and I'm hoping and praying all goes well.

I want to get back to my lowest that i was with the band..!!

what land is that ? that being 100 lbs OVERWEIGHT is sexy. Get rid of all the negative people around you?.. That is your mans insecurities ( to tell you if you lose weight he is going to leave) how sad. Is he Overweight...My husband isn't and im sure he doesn't want anyone who isn't taking care of themselves. Hell he didn't meet me big. LOL everyone has there own views on all of this. Loving yourself first will make everyone around you happy.. Im glad to read you have a therapist too. That is wonderful and you on the right track..

May 3 is right around the corner. YOU GOT THIS!!

My surgeon rarely performs the band - he won't outright refuse to do it, but told me he's put in about 3-5 over the last year and removed 20-30 due to complications or ineffectiveness. He also said he doesn't really feel comfortable putting one in someone who isn't male and under 40 (i.e., already biologically predisposed to take off more weight w/WLS). And that someone like me who gets tempted to overeat at night might not do so well, because the restriction isn't as strong at night. So it does work for some select people, but there are factors to take into consideration.

I'm finding it so strange that's the route he wants to go. I think after reading the comments I'm going to move forward with the sleeve. Seems the easiest route to go that will better help me reach my goal.

Do the sleeve reading the comments the band is a waste. ????

Ultimately, it is your decision. But, I know that my surgeon doesn't do bands anymore and that many people have problems with it. Yes, there are folks who are very happy with theirs and it works well for them.

Thank you!!! Nope he's not overweight at all. The crazy part is that I was way smaller when we met so I don't get it. He's gone now and my focus is completely on me for the first time in a long time. I can't wait, fingers crossed insurance does not put up a fight.

Just wanted to chime in.... Got banded in 2010 and it was a 6 year pain. Just issue after issue and marginal weight loss. I felt like such a fool going through all the hoops of having wls just for it not to work and I WORKED IT. Anyway I went for a fill and my doctor said "it's broke. Done". After freaking out for a moment he said it was no big deal at all, he would remove it and convert to a sleeve. And he did, within a month!!!! He had a hard time getting it out because it was all scar tissue and as a result I have a smaller pouch but I think that's a good thing!!!! And I've already lost more in the week I've had it than I lost with band- what does that tell you? And i feel awesome. Walking dog, running errands, weeding. I'm so glad that plastic is out of me... Can't tell you. You have really been incredibly impressive with all the homework you have been doing- wish I would have done the same. And it's hard to stand up to doctors sometimes- good for you for staying strong. You are well informed and seem prepared mentally. You have so got this girl!!!!!!!!!!!!! XOXOX
