I would say both are important. The good thing is that all of your liquid protein supplements count towards your fluid totals. If you HAVE to choose one over the other go for hydration, but you really shouldn't have to choose.

My surgeon says don't worry about Protein until you're on regular food. His program is fluids the first week after surgery (clear juices watered down 50%).

So to choose one, definitely hydration.

Fluids first! I had to go to the ER for dehydration and other complications.
