Any one know how long it takes to get off insulin. Had surgery two weeks ago. And have lost 30lbs.between pre and post op diet.

It depends on how long you were a diabetic. And how much insulin you take everyday. Some people never fully get off insulin because they have been diabetics for decades hope this helps

Yes to be above post. Was your insulin decreased any after surgery and before you went home? How much insulin are you on now.? Some people can dramatically reduce the amount of insulin after surgery but may not be able to stop taking it completely. There are 20% of people who are type 2 diabetic and their diabetes is not weight related.

I starting taking insulin at night in January of this year, but have been diabetic since 2010. I started the program in March of this year, and had my surgery in June. I was 37 lbs pre-op and haven't had to take any meds or insulin since my surgery date. I have had two a1c tests since then, one three weeks ago, and I am still in the normal range and don't need to do anything.

Here's how it went for me. I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic right before I moved to Texas almost 9 years ago. I didn't go see a doctor down here until about a year or so later, at which point I was diagnosed as type 2. Started on Metformin and glimipiride. Ended up switching off of Metformin and going with 2 doses of glimipiride due to diarrhea issues. Had been on that up until last year when my blood sugar kept getting up between 250-350. Was started on lantus daily insulin injection... kept increasing dose, but never was able to bring my blood sugar down as I was eating like crap. I was usually in the 300-350 range right up until I started the 2-week pre-op diet in September.

After starting the 2 week pre-op (all liquid) diet, my numbers started dropping drastically within a day or so, so I stopped taking the Lantus and have not taken it since. I also cut my glimipiride in half leading up to surgery. Since surgery, I'm taking 1/4 of the glimipiride dose I was taking before. Honestly, I haven't been checking my sugar levels, because I probably don't even need that anymore. I'll wait until December to see what my A1c says. Additionally, I'm off my cholesterol meds and only taking one of my blood pressure meds (will likely taper off that soon as well.)

I had been on Blood Sugar medicine for several years prior to the surgery but had not made the transition to insulin which was what my family doctors desired. When I left the hospital two days after surgery, the surgeon completely took me off all my blood sugar meds. I took fasting blood sugar readings every morning prior to surgery. As I dropped weight during pre-op, I noticed my blood sugar numbers were falling so I reduced the amount of drugs I took for diabetes prior to surgery.

Have you been taking daily blood sugar readings? Have they been dropping into normal range?

Prior to surgery I was taking quite a bit of insulin in the am and the pm along with taking victoza. When I was in the hospital for surgery, they stopped my insulin and never put me back on it. In fact my A1C numbers have dropped down to 5.6 and they were at 11 prior to surgery. So you may not need to be on it for long. I would definitely check your sugars 4 times a day and give those readings to your PCP so they adjust your insulin.
