Surgery Tore My Throat UP!

I woke from my Sleeve anesthesia 5days ago with blood in my nose and thick blood running down my throat. I was nauseated and in pain...but eventually by evening that wore of some. But, swallowing (aside from the usual first swallows post Sleeve), was beyond excruciating!

I then I looked back there in the mirror to see my throat it looked like something from a horror scene. And it hurts like crazy too! So aggravated, I've never seen my throat look like that. Beyond even a Strep Throat swallow. My surgeon even took a picture of it to show to the Anesthesiologist, who I know has over 30 years experience so what's the deal? Needless to say, the liquid Hydrocodone has been nightmarish to take, just burns like crazy. And whats more, I have a constant feeling like something is stuck in there when I swallow. Like a piece of throat is flailing in there (sorry, I know TMI), but I really wanted to know if anyone experienced this, and how it was resolved. It is interfering with my Fluid intake, which is already a challenge.

My surgeon said it will probably resolve, but gave me some ENT numbers just in case. Was wondering if anyone experienced same and how you dealt with it.

I am so sorry to hear you are suffering so with your throat. I have not had surgery yet, but this is one of my fears. My throat is always dry and I am afraid I too will wake up and have a terrible sore throat. Also worried about getting a severe leg cramp. When I get them at home I have meds I take immediately and it still take 5 minutes for the meds to set it.

I hope your throat gets better real soon as not being able to swallow is not good. Hopefully others who have had their surgery will reply to you.

Thank you dear. I pray yours is a smooth surgery with nothing like this! Perhaps you call tell your surgical team and post op nurse your concerns so they will be prepared to deal with anything. By Murphy's law, things you prepare for don't tend to happen

This happen to my throat but not with my sleeve surgery but after a month and a half I had my gallbladder removed and went into shock because of a latex allergy so I was intubated and in intensive care . When I woke up I felt exactly the same .. That my throat was falling in pieces! It eventually got better but it did take almost 2 weeks! Hang in there it will go away ! ????????

I had a rather long surgery. Lapband removal, gallbladder removal, hiatal repair and sleeve. Your case albeit unfirtunate, offers me great hope in this time of great adjustment. I really appreciate you chimming in to share your experience !

One thing I did not mind about the full liquid and puree stages post-op was that my throat needed those three weeks to heal.

My sleeve surgery was uncomplicated, but my throat was swollen so bad from the tubing that it was hard to swallow even Water for a while. It did get better by the time was into soft foods.

I hope that you recover quickly and get get on with the recovery process.

I had an allergic reaction a few years back and was intubated and put into a medically induced coma. My throat was sore when I woke up and hurt like hell for a good 2 weeks after. I also had a raspy voice and cough for a long time after. Eventually it healed and I was fine. I had no issues post-op from my sleeve surgery so I'm assuming everything went back to normal.

I'm sorry you went through this. It is very unfortunate. Not all people have an issue like this but most do have some raspy dry throat issues after surgery.(for those of you that haven't had surgery yet) I hope you heal quickly.

Thank you @@lorri716 I know time will probably sort it out, it's nerve wracking to wait it out but that's about the only choice I have I guess. At least when I take the pain meds it makes swallowing much easier. I'm going to hang in there!

Ellie123 You mention you had pain meds which helped the sore throat. What about others who experienced this? What were you allowed to take?

I am always sucking on sugar free cough drops or the ACT lozenge for my day to day normal dry mouth syndrome. If there is a tube going down my throat during my gallbladder and sleeve surgery I am sure I will wake up with the throat pain you all are experiencing too. I want to be prepared as I am in enough pain with my disability and I am dreading the additional pain from the surgery include throat pain.

@@ssflbelle - you may not have pain. I had pain & a cough for two weeks after bring intubated when I was placed in a medical coma and no issues at all after my sleeve surgery.

BLERDgirl I certainly hope that is true. However I do like to be prepared for all situations considering that my throat is dry and sore throughout the night and every single morning when I wake up. I have a container of Water hanging from my nightstand knob and never go anywhere without my Water.
