Aleve & Advil: DO NOT try this at home!!!!

Recommended Posts

Day before yesterday I totally punished myself at the gym and my quads have been hurting SO bad that I can barely walk. It's ridiculous!! So I get up this morning and think: "If I could just have 2 Aleve I would feel sooooo much better!" I just had a fill, so I know it's not good to swallow the things whole and I'm determined to get that Aleve in me! So I think, "I'll just put it in a glass w/ some Water, let it dissolve then swallow it down!! I'm so freakin' brilliant!!"

Even though the pills weren't totally dissolved yet, I took a tiny swig of the concoction (maybe 1/2 oz of a 1 oz cup). OH MY GOD!!! It burned like batter acid all the way down my throat and I IMMEDIATELY started sliming!! It came right back up. Now my esophagus is all irritated even though I drank and drank and drank after that episode. Thankfully, I didn't down all of that stuff with both pills fully dissolved!! I'd probably be in the hospital.

I guess there's a reason they put an enteric coating on those little pills. What a dumba$$.

Well, there's a reason we're advised not to take Advil, Aleve, Aspirin, etc. after lap band surgery, they can cause ulcers. Stick with Tylenol (My doc said I can take any pill whole as long as it's smaller than a PLAIN M&M.) or Tylenol liquid Adult Strength if you can't take the pills. Much safer.

Can you imagine taking an Aleve, and having it sit in your pouch while it dissolves? (especially since you said that it burned like battery acid in your throat) BIG TROUBLE!

Don't feel bad, I did the same thing with Toradol.

Being the brilliant nurse I KNOW I am (heh...) I decided I knew more than my surgeon so I bought some SL Toradol in Mexico. It's the type that dissolves under your tongue. I knew the issue was to avoid the drug hitting my pouch so I was extra smart and used the SL version.

OMG! What a horror that day was! I was really tight and I didn't sweat it because it was under my tongue, right? The tablet residue ... well, I swallowed it. It hit my pouch and I started barfing blood and blood clots. It was miserable.

It was also embarrassing to call my doc and ask how I go about fixing that. He gently reminded me that he TOLD me no NSAIDs.

I have to fess up though, I still take Toradol but only the injectable version now.

What if you HAVE to take baby aspirin for your heart? My cardiologist said NOT to stop taking them once you start, as it will rethicken your blood and possibly cause problems.

Don't crush or melt a time release. they are layered for a VERY good reason. so you don't get to much medicine at once. consult your doctor!!!

Terri, you actually made me laugh. I have no trouble with any types of aspirins so next time try and take them whole.

Oh my goodness NO!!!! Don't do this! If someone already has quite a bit of restriction and they take an NSAID, it will dissolved in their pouch. This could be quite serious.

If you fear that you have too much restriction for a tablet DON'T take it!! Talk to your doc, if your doc says it is okay take the liquid and chase it with at least 8oz of Water.

Baby aspirin can be chewed and chased with Water as well. Or if restriction isn't a problem take the enteric coated type and it won't break down until it is beyond the stomach and in the intestine.

Yeah, Yeah. I know, I know. But unfortunately Tylenol in any form doesn't do SQUAT for muscle pain and inflammation.

I can't even get DOWN to get into a hot tub!! Or if I did, I would never be able to get UP!

The "good" news is that my trainer was very pleased that I pushed myself that hard! WHA??? This is GOOD?

Pssst, there is children's liquid ibuprofen. It works great. Most bottles are the 5ml=100mg (but always check the label), so take the amount into account if you need a lot of Motrin (in that label's case 800mg of Motrin-the usual adult prescription dose-would equal 40ml or almost three tablespoons).

Aleve, YOUCH!<!-- google_ad_section_end --><!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Try Tylenol Arthritis-I take that for muscle pain and it works wonders. I can swallow it with no problems at all. This tylenol is for back pain, tooth ache and any other ache. try it!!

Oh Lord. I live on Ibupropen right now and Tylenol does nothing for me. I think I just read about my first huge problem I'll have after I'm banded. Uggh.

On a brighter note, way to go on that grueling workout! You know, I've found that sitting at home on my ass is a great way to avoid pain. Just a suggestion. =)

Oh darlin', believe me...I sat on my ass a LOT. Every once in a while I had to get up to get on the toilet, y'know? Can somebody please tell me why they make those things so low to the ground???? :tired:tired

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
