Today starts my preop diet..exactly 14 days before surgery

Recommended Posts

It's starting to really hit me...today I started my preop diet which means I am exactly 14 days away from surgery which is on June 23, 2015! I am excited but I also feel my nerves kicking in as well. My mind and emotions are all over the place!! I hope this will get better because this will be a long 14 days if I don't get a hold of mysel!! Does anyone else understand how I'm feeling? Is this normal? How did you deal with your emotions as your surgery date got closer?

I'd love to tell you it gets better. It does eventually, but it probably won't in the next 14 days. Not only will you have all the anxiety over the upcoming surgery, but the pre-op diet can be a real bi*** depending on how strict yours is. Hang in there. This is where you are going to start needing all the patience you can muster!

i agree with Jamie, mine was awful for me! i cried a lot, i literally cried over food and i had never done that before. just stay focused and remember why you are doing it. i am 3 weeks post and it has gotten a lot better! but the emotions during my preop were hard for me, just know you have a whole fan club behind you here!

I am with you!!!! My surgery is June 24th and I started the liquid diet on Monday by day 2 I was ready to throw in the towel... If been sad, crying and going back and forth with myself... I quit smoking which wasn't easy for me because it was my stress reliever, and now I'm quitting food!!!! I know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and this is what has to be done....it isn't easy but... We can do this!!!!

I'm with you too! Surgery June 26. My heart has been racing and I'm addicted to reading everything I can. I can't stay off this page. Lol. I'm driving my husband nuts! Good thing is I only have to be on a liquid diet the day before which is fine cause I probably won't be able to eat anything by then. Sooo nervous!

I am getting my sleeve on June 23rd too! I am definitely learning the difference between "head hungry" and "physical hunger". At work is the hardest for me, but my friends are really supportive. We'll keep in touch!

I'm on day 10 of my two-week pre-op diet, and it's been crazy. I've definitely cried a few times. On day 4, I had to lock myself in the bathroom at work to sob and hyperventilate, just overwhelmed by this huge life change. I've had a few thoughts of, "Oh my god... why are you doing this?! Can't you just control your eating like a normal person?!" But the answer is, no, I can't. I've been struggling with my weight and eating since I was about 8. Another round of Weight Watchers is just not going to do it. And I can't keep going like I have been the past few years, gaining weight and having health issues, because I'm only 34 and I can't do half the things that my 61-year-old mother can.

I definitely recommend avoiding the grocery store and gatherings with focus on food during the pre-op diet, especially if yours is liquids only. I made the mistake of stopping at the grocery store for a few things last night and almost lost it in the bakery section. I'm finding that I have to keep reminding myself that I will not be on a liquid diet forever! It also helps if you do not have to cook meals for others right now. It's just my husband and me, and thankfully he is very sensitive to my needs and is doing Herbalife shakes while I'm on liquids, eating his "real food" for lunch and having a shake with me at suppertime.

I'm on day 3 of 14 of the pre op diet . My surgery date is 6/22. I can honestly say I'm more excited than nervous. My diet isn't as strict as some others I've read ( I can have 2 meals under 350cal, 3 Protein Shakes, a cup of veggies, and 64oz of Fluid a day). However, I noticed today I'm a little agitated and felt like crying earlier. Im used to having Pepsi everyday so I know I'll have the headaches that's come from caffeine withdrawal soon. I try and remind myself why I'm doing this and tell myself it'll get better.

@@lauraellen80 It's awesome that your husband is being so supportive. That really helped me through as well. I do NOT envy the people on these forums that have to cook for their kids or whatever during pre-op. Everything you are going through sounds completely normal. The anxiety over the upcoming surgery and the deprivation of the pre-op diet makes a pretty miserable combination!

I am just on the other side of that, 9 days postop. The 14 day preop diet was the hardest diet i have ever done, and like all of us, I've done them all! I just kept telling myself that it would make my surgery safer and help me to adjust afterward. Both are true. Also, my nutritionist told me she would rather have me eat more of what was on my diet than flip out and go off the rails with cake or something. Check with your NUT to see if that is allowed, but it did really help me to be able to grab more yogurt or applesauce or Protein Shake if I needed to. Also...drink your water! It really does help fill you up. You can do this!

I have the same date as you!! My preop diet is making me sick so far, slight nausea and sometimes a headache, and I've never craved Chipotle more in my entire life. My nerves are going haywire right now, just thinking about how my relationship with food is going to change and the slight possibility of a complication lol. I'd love to keep in touch though, since we are both getting Sleeved on the 23rd! (:

I am on a very similar schedule & I understand exactly what you are saying. I started my pre-op on the 8 with my surgery scheduled for 6 /22. Besides making sure I am eating the right things I keep second guessing myself. I know that I have battled this all my life and have tried everything else. I just want to get through the surgery and on with my life. I am also struggling with who I want to tell.

Just has sleeve surgery mon 6-8 and I know exactly how you feel! First three days are rough then food's place in your routine starts to subside as does hunger. Eat puddings, Soups you love and enjoy. By the time I got to day 14 I was scared with knowing there's no turning back. At that point it was just get it over with! Try to remember you're not giving food up forever! I've set a July 1 date to allow myself a treat and knowing that helps. Keep busy and do things now to get ready. You WILL be tired, sore and it's true that getting enough Water is a challenge. The two weeks will be gone before you know it...a necessity on your way to a forever change! ????

I totally understand! We have the same surgery date, and I have a strict 2 week pre-op diet that only allows 3 shakes and 2 Protein Bars per day. I'm feeling absolutely miserable - Migraine, hungry, nausea, weak, digestive issues, and overall foggy-headed. I'm getting anxious that I'll never feel better and that this is how I will feel after surgery forever. I know that's illogical, but it's scary.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
