Ummm ok been banded since Jan 30th, Ive officially lost 50lbs and had a friggin blast cleaning out rubber made containers and closets this weekend. Bad news? In a relatively routine discussion with my Gyn on Friday she says, you need to have a thyroid panel done, bone density scan, etc... Have the blood work done yesterday, choloestroal (sp) is freaking awesome and very normal!!!! wooo hooooo, butttttttt she says, my ths was low which is indicative of hyperthryoid...reading symptoms on the web, some fit some dont, but the one that caught my eye was that treatments will make you gain weight back....UM HELLLLLLLOOOOO I dont friggin think so.... Helppppppp has anyone had this still have this whats the story how are you effected with the lap band?????? Im freaking out here and would love for someone to set me straigt.........:help::help::help::help::help::help::help::help::help:

Well, I can't speak personally because I have HYPOthyroidism but a friend of mine ( without band ) has hyper and even when she was on medications she was still losing weight like crazy ( not that she wasn't already a bean pole anyway )... but I don't think it will effect your weight loss as much as you'd think.

I'm confused. I was told Hyper was a high TSH level and Hypo was low. I'm Hypo, low.

me too, Pam but I think she thinks when she's put on medication for overactive thyroid that the meds will make her gain weight back.

Now im confused, nurse that called with the results said that I have Low ths which means that its a hyperthroid because its overworking...... i guess my concern is that here Ive lost 50lbs with the lap band and they want to put me on meds that will make me gain it again????? ugggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg

Hy: I have "Graves Disease" fancy name for Hyperthyroid. The Graves is the name of the doctor that discovered the disease. I had radioactive iodine that disolved my thyroid (I now have none) and have been put on synthroid. Unfortuately, the specialist must have you gain weight to be sure the synthroid is doing its job. I was horrified when she expected me to go up to 223 lbs. Since then I went not to223 but up to 303 as I became Hypothyroid (which is when you thyroid is not producing). In desperation, I just had the band put on and I am now loosing and the synthroid has stablized. You may know of Graves disease as Mrs. Bush was diagnosed with it when she was first lady. Doddie.

I am hypo - mom was hyper and had to ahve her thyroid removed. I have seen a dr. who does not believe in the standard guidelines for hypo and hyper meaning that with meds I was considered normal (borderline)but had all the symptoms of still being hypo. He changed my meds and I feel so much better. I guess my point is that if you are borderline, I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you start feeling a rapid heartbeat or feel really hyperactive then I'd get it rechecked. My mom was a basketcase when she was hyper - ate whole apples pies adn was a bean pole too! Didn't make me happy since I've always had a weight issue! By the wasy the doctor I saw is an MD, but practices functional and intergrated medicine. He's really helped me a lot with some other medical issues too. Good Luck!

I have Hypothyroidism (Hashimotos Thyroiditis) and this is what my dr explained to me. TSH is the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone. TSH is produced when the hypothalamus releases a substance called thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). TRH then triggers the pituitary glandto release TSH. TSH causes the thyroid gland to produce two hormones: triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). T3 and T4 help control your body's metabolism.He said the Hypothalamus makes up for the Thyroid not producing enough T3 -T4 by over comensating with the TRH. This over compensation causes increased levels of TSH and makes your thyroid gland produce the T3 and T4 more often to make up for the fact that your thyroid is not functioning correctly. If you have a low TSH then your thyroid may be overworking. I trust what your dr is saying is correct

Thanks bigsexy! But help me too, my TSH was .005 Which is that? Hypo or hyper? If I remember correctly that is low TSH so therefore you have HYPER - or overactive thyroid. MY TSH was somewhere like 15 for reference. I don't remember what the normal range of TSH was but for some reason the numbers 5-8 are sticking out in my head.
