I am going for my EGD procedure on Friday and I have some questions. How long does the procedure usually take? I have never been put under for anything before so how long does it take to feel awake and normal after the procedure? The nurse mentioned I shouldn't be alone for 24 hours afterwards....will I really be out of it all day long?

I work for a gastroenterologist office. The procedure itself takes 15 minutes. We recommend no driving for 16 hours and you will feel groggy. I, myself had had many of the egds and I've been alone afterwards with no issues, but I guess every dr is different

As @@CountryGirl5584 said, the procedure took 15 minutes. I was given Propofol and went out like a light. When I woke up I felt a bit dizzy, but I got up and walked around and I was fine after less than 10 minutes. The medical center did require that someone drive me to/from the medical center, but I was fine all day after that. The doctor went over my results (pictures included!) and explained everything.

No pain or anything...total breeze.

Yes, thanks. I hope the anesthesia will wear off quickly so I can do some things around the house and won't sleep the whole day away!!

I don't think you'll be sleepy. I've been under a couple times now. On the last surgery (tubes tied) once I finally woke up which took me about 20mins. I was ready to go out and walk around the mall. my dr told me to go straight home. .but my husband and I went out to eat then we went home.
