So, March of last year my coat got a giant rip in it. I pitched it because it wasn't in a spot that could be easily or inconspicuously repaired, and didn't think about it again (I was feeling optimistic about the surgery timeline).

Fast forward to November. It's STUPID cold, and the only coat I have left is too small to zip (it won't fit over a sweater at all, but I don't have many of those left either...I haven't purchased / replaced much clothes in the last couple of years). Surgery is next Tuesday.

If you were me, would you go ahead and get a coat that fits right now just to be warm, and deal with the fact that it's going to be baggy by the end of winter and probably unwearable next year, or would you suck it up and deal with a coat that doesn't quite fit now, hoping that enough weight will come off (and quickly enough) to wear this one for the rest of the winter?

Are you wealthy and can afford a new coat that may be too big next winter?

The thrift stores are awesome for this! My favorite coat is from a thrift store

I had the same delema, no winter coat! So one day while at wal-mart i saw a beautiful lightweight purple all weather coat! The sizes i had to choose from were S, M, L or 2x!! I had to go with the 2x that is bigger then my size before surgery, but i was stuck! It's baggy, but just think how you'll be able to layer under it!!! That was my thought for this winter!!! Hope this helps!!!

Thanks! I think I'll be living with this one unless I can find a cheap Wal-Mart coat or something. It's such a trivial problem in the grand scheme of things, but it fell into the "one more thing to deal with, and a week left to figure it out" pile...which is growing exponentially, lol.

I would do the goodwill/salvation army run...for a few bucks you should be able to find a decent coat (check mens too) to get you thru until you can get a new one in the RIGHT size ... or at least until you get a good sale...

I bought 3 pairs of jeans last weekend for under $15!!! It's so nice to be able to find my "new" size in something I can afford... I work in a call center, so I see NO ONE all day long... so casual attire is done here... I hate spending big money on clothes... maybe that will change now, but I doubt it

as your weight goes down PO

you will frequently need different size clothes

thrift shop as a temporary solution

better then spending lots of money

on clothes you can only wear for a short time

You may as well get one that will fits now and will be loose later. You cannot count on the pounds happily dropping off per your own timeline. I lost 65 pounds easily and then everything came to a screeching halt with 35 left to go. In my closet are some new things the next two sizes down and just waiting on my body to catch up. I went crazy thinking these things would fit over the summer. Now I have sleeveless tops and shorts that will probably fit me in February, and I live in freezy - a** Chicago, which from November through March may as well be Alaska! It's a good thing that I kept last winter's coat. It is loose right now, but wearable.

@Miss Mac I'm originally from Chicago...now in Savannah (so nice here) ... going home for Christmas...had to dig in closet to find clothes to wear there... no coat on earth is warm enough for the midwest! LOL

I don't know your size but Woman Within has their coats on sale right now.

Buy a winter coat. Just don't spent a lot. If you can thrift or catch a sale even better, but you need a coat. If it's too big next year you can sell it on eBay or donate it.

Good points, I'm actually cringing at the idea of going outside. I think I'm going to have to cave and get the coat . I found one on bcoutlet really cheap - not in love with it, but it's a coat!

I understand going nuts on stuff. The K-mart near me just shut down, and when I went in all the women's summer tops were $1.20. I didn't even look at sizes, I just grabbed. Now I have $25 worth of medium and large summer tops in my closet that may or may not ever fit, lol.

I have found that Ross prices are so good, they sometimes beat Goodwill! Why not have a new coat for less than used?

Kathy, thats such a wonderful idea about the donations on the board, i was also wondering what i was gonna do with a family of 4 on 1 income, and i never knew or even thought of thrift stores, planning on bringing all my big sized work clothes that i have now! As many retailors are gearing up for the holiday season and black Friday sales there are plenty of coats available for under $100 and even some under $50. If you are shopping online I recommend you google "Store name+coupon code". Additionally if you shop online frequently you should join as cash back program such as Ebates. They are good for electronic, Vitamin shops like GNC, and pretty much anything you could name and it's always nice to get a free check in the mail!

In years past I have bought a decent coat on the cheap at Burlington Coat Factory.
