Complications....so broken and sadden

as im writing this i am uncontrollably crying. I had gastric sleeve surgury on 8/25. I was fine the first week, the second week i noticed I had lots of gas pain...so i thought...then i thought it was constipation. Called the nurse at the office and she gave me more pain meds and told me to take a mirilax. After i did all that I did feel better, but my upper left side of stomach still was hurting. I also felt that i couldn't drink enough so I felt dehydrated. So on 9/7 I went tot he hospital. I was admitted once they did a CT scan and found an infection and abcess with a small leak. I was then rushed to surgury and admitted to the hospital. I had a horrible time at the first hospital I was at because the nursing staff seemed to not know how to do anything. They even had me miss a dose of antibiotics. I got a PICC line and was told that my white blood cell count is high and needed to come down to normal range. Throughout the week, things only got worst. Finally on that friday my doctors wanted to transfer me to another hospital in case they needed to put in a stent. I went there and everything was seemed to turn around. On that saturday, I got a CT assisted procedure where they sucked out the bad stuff in my abcess and put in another drain. Afterwards my white blood cell count decreased and I felt better. Well Im home now with 2 drains, a PICC line, and TPN and 5 days with of antibiotics.

Im so sad and hurt because I don't know what to do. Im so scared this is going to go on for months. I'm only 29 years old. I look at all these boxes of medicine and I break down crying. And the thing about is is that I did it to myself. I was pefectly healthy. I was 297 lbs, but i was active. I have faith in God that he will bring me through this and take care of everything. Its just so hard right now. I am out of work, I can't bathe myself, or even comb my hair. And my poor fiance. He is hanging in there with me and supporting me. He helps me do everything while still working. I just cry everything I think about what I did to him. I love him so much and i never wanted this for him. He was fine with me, he just wanted me healthy and thats all. Not a certain size or anything. I did this because I couldn't control myself and displine myself to stay in a healthy lifestyle on my own. I didn't think it would be easy, but I didn't think it would be like this. I am sooooo scared.

i have an appointment on monday for a swallow study (don't know what that is), then an appointment with my surgeon the next day. I pray that everything goes well. I don't know how much I can take of this.

Has anyone went through something like this?

Hi; I know exactly how you are feeling. No one really knows unless they go through it all. They can show compassion but they don't know really! We are groomed to think that it is going to be a piece

Awesome news. I know the feeling of being sick and not seeing the light. I went through my ordeal for about 7 months and over 30 procedures culminating in a total stomach removal. I felt like it would

They are going to do one of 3 things. Either a Rue n Y or a by pass. Either will fix the problem. I know..been there done that! On to different complications now! :)

well i am waiting on my surgeon and GI doctor to get back with me after getting together and going over all my labs and results.

I really miss dinner time. I miss eating what I want...sometimes I am excitied for what is to come once all this is over, but I'm so sick of TPN and want to eat and drink so bad...

I know it will only be a short time before I will be able to get back to normal...i guess i'm just ranting right now.

Rant on! I want to learn from others. You are not going to find surgeons divulging these things. Each person has something to add.

Besides, having been on TPN and having a wild GI tract, I can well sympathize with your position.

How are things going now?

I had my sleeve done on 6/13. I like you did well for a week or so. Then I got nauseated and a fever so they did a bunch of different scans and they found a leak. I was admitted to the hospital and put on iv antibiotics. I wasn't allowed anything by mouth at all. I was so thirsty. They put in a picc line and started me on tpn and sent me home. My mom had to do everything for me. I was so weak and depressed. Well next thing I know I had another fever so back to the hospital I went only to find out I had a picc line infection. So I was in the hospital for another 8-10 days. They decided to put the picc line in my other arm and send me home and guess what it got infected too and I also got sepsis so they had to put me in icu. My bp was so low I almost died but God wasn't through with me yet. They then sent me home with a tube that went up my nose and down my throat to my stomach. This is how I got my tpn. The tube came out of my nose eight separate times in my sleep. Everytime it happened I had to go back to the hospital which is an 1 1/2 hr. drive to get the tube reinserted. They weight just fell off. I lost 120 lbs. in 8 mths. I always felt hungry and I cried alot I got very depressed. When I got to start eating I ate whatever I wanted which was a BIG mistake!!! I have gained 69 lbs in 7 months. Im so disappointed in myself. I did this to better my health and I almost died 3 seperate times. Then I go back to bad eating habits. I wish you all the best. Hang in there.

Nanna it sounds like you had a really hard time. How are you doing, both physically and mentally? You have been thru a lot. What could we do to help you? We can talk about what to eat and the like but I think the issue is more that you were depressed, feeling deprived and then ate the emotions you had. Did the doctor at any point suggest helping you? That's what I don't understand - unless they're like my bariatric surgeon.

I would love any help at all. My docter just was upset when I started gaining weight. I need to find out why I eat when I do and ways to change that behavior. I dont want to gain all that would weight

Weight back

Have you considered attending Overeaters Anonymous? I don't understand why you would have gone back to your old essaying habits and it sounds like you don't either. My advice would be to seek out some sort of counseling .

First off, I'm so sorry. Secondly, I'm going to share with you all my complications and trust me, with time it does get better.

1 August 5, 2014 - gastric sleeve surgery

2 Since August I've been in the ER a total of 7 times and combined hospital stays totaling 56 days

3 My stomach collapsed to the size of a "spring in a ball point pen"

4 They tried to balloon my stomach - did not work.

5 They placed two stents in my stomach which my body tried to reject them.

6 The stent moved and blocked food intake, therefore throwing up again another surgery to re-position them.

7 3 - weeks later they removed stents and my stomach went back to the size of a spring.

8 I've been depressed, crying from all the pain, very weak, throwing up everything I've ate

9 I hired a energy healer to come to my house - not sure if that worked.

10 Another surgery to place the stents back in.

Finally my immediate family was so scared and pissed, they hired a doctor to come into my house for a week straight. The doctor placed me on a STRICT regimen - I had to track everything that goes into my body and what comes out of my body including urine and BM (bowel movements). I was on 30cc of pedialyte for the first hour then the second hour I had to drink 30cc of Protein and I could only sleep for 8 hours then when my 8 hours were up I had to set my alarm on my phone every hour. I did that for the first two days, then on the 3rd day I did 60cc of pedialyte and juice then the following hour was just 30cc of protein like Optifast. That has kept me out of the hospital from dehydration.

Anyway, I'm still on the strict regime. I'm feeling better - I'm starting to get color back in my face and I'm not as weak. I have not been back to work since August. This has been a complete nightmare. You may want to talk with your doctor about that. I'm also on Neurontin (Gabapetin 300mg) Carafate to coat my stomach and protonix to prevent acid reflux, Zofran to keep me from throwing up and pain medicine.

Again, I'm so sorry and please know you are not alone. Please keep your chin up and there is light at the end of the tunnel. To date, I've lost 95 pounds and if I lose any more I'll look sick.

im so sorry to hear this happened to you. it is not easy going through complications. I felt my world was over and couldn't believe i had done that to myself. Now on the other end of it and im finally feeling fine.

I am off the TPN, PICC line is out and im eating regular foods. Still trying out new stuff and I have become very very picky about what I eat.

I am glad for everyone here that at least a few things are starting to look better & turn around at least a small amount. I've got my own set of complications and I am happy that people hopefully get a break. It really sucks. LOL. Sorry but it does.
