I'm nervous to have the EGD done before surgery. What exactly do they do? Will I be awake when they do it?

Ahh yes, the infamous EGD. I had it done twice before surgery. The first time I was in the Matrix (not fully there). I was awake fo rthe whole process. The nurse was surprised. I didn't feel a thing but it was a weird experience.The second time I was out like a light. They will administer meds for you to go to sleep. They may offer you a spray to numb your throat(I highly suggest it). They will insert a tube like the size of a pen into you rmouth and down to your stomach. It will be painless and hopefully you will be asleep. It will be okay.

I was nervous about that too! Probably more so than the actual surgery lol. Turned out to be nothing at all to be worried about. Basically, they will have you stop eating and drinking the night before. You go in, they will give you a gown to wear and make you pee in a cup for a prego test. Then they will get you comfy on a gurney and start your IV (for me this was the worst part, blew a vein). When you get into the room where the procedure is done, they will have you lie on your left side. The will give you this little mouth guard that you put in your mouth between your teeth. Then they knock you out with some good drugs. About 10 min later you will wake up in the recovery area, feeling like you had a great nap. I got my preliminary results right then, but you will have a follow up visit. Personally, I didn't feel weird at all when I woke up, but I know that varies. I was told to take the rest of the day off, but I was back at work that night. Be sure you bring someone to drive you home, and wear something comfy. Your throat may be a little sore, but that is normal. If you are going to an endoscopy center, believe me, they will be running like a machine, you won't be there long!

just had mine yesterday, coupled with a colonoscopy at the same time, and it went just like slasherms said. i too was more worried about this, and it was a nothing.

I had my EGD with stomach biopsy done September 12th. I've had them before and knew what to expect, but I can tell you the KC Bariatric Surgery Center (on Prairie View Parkway, Lenexa, KS) was SUPERB! I had to go no food/drink after midnight. No gowns or lab tests were required beforehand. I stayed in my street clothes the whole time. The nurse administered a small anesthetic before placing the IV line, which was practically pain free (other than the little bit when the needle first went into my arm). The procedure went quick and I hardly remember anything other than the nurse helping put the guard in my mouth and spraying the back of my throat, which was painless. I had a little soreness (and not what anyone would consider pain) afterwards because of the biopsy, but nothing that stopped me from eating or drinking anything afterwards.
