:) Hi everyone,

I have received my surgery date, all approved for one procedure! Converting from band to sleeve on March 18! I am very excited and NERVOUS! Any others in the same boat? I am nervous about drains, heparin shots etc. I didnt have any of that with the band.

Looking for some advice and insight! If you've been coverted already, please let me know your success, problems, fears!

Thanks

Jen

Hello jeninpink,

I am having surgery March 11th.. I was nervous these past couple weeks. I could not really pinpoint exactly why or what concerns I had. Mostly, just the change in my life that is coming my way. I feel like the real me has been hidden from the world in a large suit for 20 years, and now I am about to live again. I have completed everything required for surgery.. In fact just got the clearance for surgery from my Internal Medicine doc today.

I know the risks of surgery and they are minimal. But, the results and the success by far out weigh what the alternative of not doing anything at all.

When I read the stories of others being nervous the days leading up to surgery and then reading they are 3 days post op and doing well; that continues to motivate me even more. Good Luck to you. See you on the other side of the scale :-)

March 13th for me. Excited, scared, nervous. But mostly just anxious to be 1 or 2 months post op. I'm in list making mode today. Going grocery shopping soon. Most worried about nausea. I keep saying I have butterflies in my stomach that's about to shrink!

Hi Jeninpink . I had by revision this past Tuesday and I was worried about all that too but it actually wasn't that bad. No more pain that when I had the band. I actually opted for 0 pain medication at all at the hospital. I was there 1 night and received 2 Heparin shots in my tummy but they use such a tiny needle if you can have a lap band fill, heparin is a walk in the park. I can't comment on the drain tube because my dr doesn't use them. I came home Wed and I've been drinking just fine. Already up making my niece lunch today

Surgery is set for March 17th. Nervous but anxious to get it over with. I like the post that said, "only spent one night in hospital and already up doing things around the house, plus didn't need pain medicine". You gotta love that. Mine is a lap-band conversion to a sleeve. Hope that I have the same information to post 4 days post-op.

I really needed to see your post. The band pain was bearable. So that's good to hear you handled it so well. I have an infant at home that I'm DREADING being away from. It will be fine, I know, just more nervous jitters. I did very well with the band, until the problems started do I'm eager to be a few weeks post op. My dr. Requires heparin 3x daily, for two weeks, I keep the drain til my Fluid is below 59cc (gah, I'm so squeemish). I'm looking forward to the weight loss jump start, liquid diet starts Wednesday. How do you feel today? What is doc having u do now,

I feel 1000 times better today. I absolutely hate Protein shakes but I am feeling not having it so today I took 1 cup of Greek yogurt, and 1 cup of lactaid and put it in the blender for Breakfast. It was deelish and gave me 25 grams of protein! I have my follow up with the surgeon on Wed so I'm kinda just waiting till then. The muscle pain is fading and I stood up straight today and walked around the market!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
