Hi! I'm a 42-yo male in N FL. I've struggled with my weight most of my life. I'm Type 2 diabetic, have high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol and triglycerides (imagine that!). My DH was banded on Feb 21 and after going through the entire experience with him, I decided it was my time (I had to make sure it wasn't too bad :guess). I've seen my primary care Dr and have my first appointment with the weight loss center tomorrow. I'm a little nervous - I watched my oldest sister live through stomach stapling, only to regain every ounce and more (probably double what she had lost) and I'm pretty much a chicken $%@& when it comes to pain. But if DH can do it, so can I.

I appreciate any and all advice/support/encouragement I can get, so feel free to drop me a line.

Thanks!

Hi Eddie! Welcome!

The best advice I can give is to research and read/respond to the threads on this site. I have learned a lot of info from folks' experiences and this is a great place to get encouragement! My mom had the full gastric bypass a few years ago and has done well with it but she has known many who have the bypass to gain some of the weight back and go have the lap band done on top of the bypass... so.. that tells me that (at least my way of thinking) that the band is a great way to go. It is not going to make me skinny but will assit me in getting my body where I want it. It is stated many times on this site and the doctors will tell you.. the band is a tool. I think that the support and encouragment given here is also a very important tool. I have not even been banded yet but the atmosphere here has already been beneficial to me.

Welcome!! Every person's pain tolerence is different so don't let your DH's pain scare you away. I had so little of pain I asked them to quit giving me the pain meds right out of surgery! Easiest and most painless surgery I've been through and I've had 3 kids "all natural!" two of which were twins, a DNC, gallbladder taken out, tubes tied, a "female" surgery and the lap band. Sounds like you'll have support at home from someone who's been there and the extra support really helps a lot.....even if it's just someone to watch T.V. with and talk your feelings out with. Good luck and keep us informed!

Lisa.

Hi Batty!

I'm just south of Jax, in Northern St Johns County! What part of town are you in? I'm going through the weight loss center on Baymeadows - can't place the proper name this early in the morning (need coffee!!!) - and Dr. Steven Webb is doing the surgery. I'm just starting the process, so I probably won't be banded until late June-early July.

Welcome to LBT! It is so cool that the two of you will be doing it together. I would think that would be easier because you have someone helping you all the time. Good Luck!

Hi Eddie!

well, it's easier to say Jacksonville, but it's officially the tail end of Orange Park where it turns into Middleburg.*LOL* Dr. Cywes is on Beach Blvd. and was referred to me by all my other drs. I didn't even realize there was a weight loss surgery place on Baymeadows. I used to live in Mandarin a good 5 years ago, too. Cool that we are so close by each other!!

Actually, you're even closer than you realize. If you take 218 across to 17, then south to 16, come over the Shands Bridge and I'm about 5 minutes or so away!

I Just wanted to welcome you and tell you I too didn't need anything for pain and was up and doing everything I had always done on day 4 and riding 4 wheelers all day on day 9 or 10 so don't let his pain scare you. It was much easier than my root canal, seriously.

If you have any questions about before, during, or after surgery, although you have been through it basically first hand please feel free to pm me with any questions you might have.

I wish you all the luck in the world and you will be in my thoughts. Hope you hubby is doing well.

beachgirl, thanks for attempting to allay the fears of this chicken $h!t. I do feel better about things today. I actually had my appointment with the weight loss center earlier today, and I'm even more confident now that this is the right thing for me to do. I should be able to have my surgery anywhere between mid-April to early May. Woo hoo! :clap2:

Batty, are you pre-op as well? What hospital?

Eddie, yes I am pre-op too, but I'll be having my surgery at the Beaches Surgery Center instead of Memorial Hospital. I was surprised because of all my co-morbidities and stuff. I was kind of looking forward of a night without my kids but it costing me less as I am self pay balances it out too. LOL

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
