Hi! I was wondering what made you choose gastric bipass over the sleeve? I have a consultation with the surgeon on Jan 15th and I want to do one or the other! I'm not sure which one yet! I would love some feedback. Thanks!

I had wanted RNY since 05 it wasnt til this past year I was finally able to get surgery...when I went into my 6 month program I was now set on the Sleeve but thru the course of the year I changed back to RNY because I need total restriction, I need to dump or know the risk of anyways...I have friends on MFP that has the Sleeve and can eat 1200 calories of sugary greasy junk 2 months out. That was my main reason and although the sleeve has been around awhile and people do great I have seen people get RNY after sleeve ...I only want to do surgery once so for me RNY it was!

That is what I heard! Movie theater popcorn is one of my weaknesses. Thank gosh I don't go to the movies often!

I suggest to go all the way with the gastric bypass. I had my surgery on may 1st, 2012. I have lost 120lbs. That was the one for me. I loved eating sweets instead of regular food and now if I eat something sweet it will make me very nervous. So I know not to do that. I haven't pick back up on drinking cokes. I drink water and buy the crystal light drinks to put I n my water.

I went with the bypass because my doc said there was a proven success with it, and he felt it was my best chance to lose the weight and keep it off. I also felt that if I was going to do this I wanted to do it once and not have to worry about revisions.

As for the food question. Everyone is different, and you will get different answers. I am able to eat anything at 18 months post op. You an your new pouch will go through a getting to know you period. It will let you know the items you can and can not have. Keep in mind that list changes all the time. Things that made me sick in the beginning I have no problem with now. Sometimes things I have had no problem with suddenly make me sick. I have no problem with popcorn or rice. However some doctors do not allow popcorn. You should always go with what your doctors instructions.

My surgeon stays away from sleeves due to a higher amount of complications.. He has been providing WLS for 20 years .... I know many folks on these forums are very happy with their choices. I am only 5 weeks out from bypass and am feeling 100% and have lost 3 dress sizes and 39#.. And off my meds I had been on!

I chose bypass since it seems to be the tried and true method. I also have quite a lot to lose, so I am thinking this is the best option for me.

I too chose RNY for the simple reason that I was a sugar addict and i knew if i were ever able to have it in anyway I'd probably end up a big girl again. So that's why I choose Rny over sleeve. Dumping is my friend. :-)

I was actually planning on getting the gastric sleeve and then I went to a support group in my area. I noticed that a lot of the people at the support group got the gastric sleeve and then later went on to get the gastric bypass. For me I just wanted to do one surgery and I wanted it to be effective. There are a lot of different doctors and requirements from my insurance in order to actually get the surgery and I did not want to go through that again. So I ended up changing from the sleeve to bypass weeks before my surgery. I must say that I made the best choice for myself and for the longevity of keeping the weight off! I am now almost 2 weeks out from surgery and I'm feeling great drinking liquids I'm up and active and I'm loving it!

I had done a ton of research and was set on getting the sleeve. Both my doc and NUT recommended the bypass. Both because of my type 2 diabetes and because it's the "gold standard" of WLS. To be honest, i changed to bypass at the last minute. I wasnt entirely comfortable with my decision, but now feel confident i made the right choice. I only want to go thru this process once, so im glad i picked the surgery with the best track record. Btw, i dont dump and am happy i can enjoy a little goodie now and then. Good luck to you!

I needed to have consequences! I'm weak and a sugar addict. I knew if given half a chance I would cheat. Rny provided the biggest lifestyle change. I knew I needed to be forced to face something not so great or I'd eat just like before. Also the idea it was the gold standard of wls made me feel more confident.

I originally wanted the duo switch, but the weight I lost put me below the BMI for ins to cover it. I decided to go with sleeve but then on my last consult, they wanted to at least tell me about the bypass and its benefits. The highlights were:

Better hunger control vs. sleeve

Reduction of certain cancers by about 70%

Less chance of reflux issues

The ability to still lose weight 12-18 months post op

Less stalling of weight loss and plateaus

About 75% loss of excess body weight

The only WLS that is 100% reversible

I have dropped 20 pounds in 2 weeks and am honestly shocked. They told me to expect 1-3 pounds per week and about 12 pounds a month.
