Preop I was on oral meds taking metformin 500mg x4 daily along with gliclazide 30mg x2 daily for my T2 diabetes. Im only 10 days post op (down 30lbs in 20 days), and proud to say that my physician took me off all diabetic meds! This is great news as I've been T2 for almost 12 years!! *happy dance*

This is awesome news!! You know I think it's one of the truest successes of this surgery, to be able to get off the meds. And you did it in record time:)

I had a brother in law who had the big D and saw what it did to him. Kidney transfer, amputation, eye laser surgery.. And finally heart failure.

Yes, I hear you on what the big D can do....This summer I learned that I was at the very early stages of Diabetic Retinopathy, which just basically put another check mark in the "I made the right decision to get on the wait list for this surgery column"

Proud for you!!!! After my 11/18 surgery I am off metformin, and my husband, long time diabetic, is 2 weeks post op and praying for a miracle off the insulin! Keep up the great work, so worth it!!!!

That is so awesome! My husband also a T2 diabetic had surgery on 1/2/14 and hasn't had any diabetic medications since. Prior to surgery he had to have insulin and his A!C was 12.8. His blood glucose now runs 102-120. He's feeling a little weak. I told him probably because he has been used to running 225-350 for the past 10 years. It's going to take a while to get used to having a normal blood glucose. It kinda like he feels hypoglycemia now. Congratulations to you!

WOW, that sounds great! All of you! My husband had the sleeve 12/2 and is still on his base dose of insulin, but he is weak from the drop in his blood pressure. He came off one BP med, and even though he felt woozy he got in the shower and passed out cold. Cracked 6 tiles, cut his arm terribly, and terrible bruising where he hit his face. We do our best to have minimum carbs and sugar. I hate diabetes. I hope I never have another 3 a.m. morning with him unconscious and calling rescue. Horrible experiences over 22 years, which is our reason for WLS.

"Hi Nessa, I am 14 months post VSG and insulin dependent still til this day. My diabetes has improved significantly. A year ago I was taking 120 units Lantus, 1000mg metformin, 10mg of Glyberide and had an A1C of 10.9! Now I take no orals and only 30 units of Lantus at night with an A1C of 6.8! I'm thrilled. My doctor states that not every one who has had the sleeve will get off of insulin. There are two "types" of Diabetes Type 2. The first "type" is obesity induced only and once a person loses the weight the signs and symptoms of diabetes seems to vanish. These are the lucky ones. As for me, I am the 2nd type; hereditary. Both my parents are Type 2 diabetics. By doctor said that it's in my genes and I will always b e diabetic but now I can control it with diet, exercise and a small amount of insulin. As long as I am healthy I decided not to let using insulin dictate my life. My starting weight in March 2013 was 248 with BMI of 44 (I am only 5'4). I am now at 188 with BMI of 32. The other thing that is tough is that the use of any insulin can hinder weight loss. After about the 10th month after surgery, I stopped losing a lot and now I am lucky if I can lose a pound a month. And it's not for the lack of trying. I do kickboxing twice a week, yoga, swim and walk at least 5 days a week. I stick to a 1200 calorie, high Protein, low carb diet and hardly ever see the needle move on the scale. However, I did lose more inches than pounds as I fit nicely in a size 12. So I'm not that disappointed. Maybe the other 30 lbs will come off, maybe not. I'm sorry I couldn't tell you that you will be off insulin. All I can say is, it depends."

Sounds like your husband switched from high to low octane!

I too am off 2 of my 3 meds! Sleeved 7/31 & at post op appointment 5 days later my doc was sooo excited! A1c had dropped from 7.9 to 5.9! The fact that I had diabetes was a major factor in my decision to go forward with the surgery, as my father was type 2 diabetic and I saw everything that can happen as he had it all... This was the best decision of my life and I am so glad that I did it! I wanted to nip it in the bud before I reached the insulin stage...
