Help! Surgery is in 4 days and hubby is sick!

My husband is sick and the dr. says it's contagious. I have surgery in 4 days and I'm afraid of getting sick. I am already fighting allergies right now and have a little bit of a cough. I think the cough is from the drainage. Should I go to the dr. and try to get some antibiotics? If I have to cancel this surgery....I will have to wait until next year. :( He got a shot and all kinds of meds. I am hoping that I don't get it.

Any advice?

You don't say what is wrong with him. Colds and flu are caused by viruses and antibiotics do not affect them. Besides you were probably exposed to the virus at the same time he was, so what will be, will be. Tamaflu can minimize flu symptoms if taken as soon as the symptoms show up.

Not all illnesses block surgery--your doctor will decide based on your condition. Good luck.

He has an upper respiratory infection and just got home from offshore yesterday evening.

The call your surgeon's office, tell them what is going on and ask for their advice. If antibiotics are needed they can prescribe them, but taking any meds in the 2 weeks before surgery can be problematic so we sure to do this with your surgeon and not through your PCP.

I would call your surgeon's office and tell them the situation. Keep getting your fluids in and get plenty of rest. But it would be best just to talk to them about it and it would probably put your mind at ease. Good luck!!

YOUR HEALTH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. SURGERY CAN WAIT IF NEED BE. TALK TO THE DOCTOR! BEST WISHES.

Agree. Don't hide this from your surgeon. You're both on the same team.

Baby your hubby and help him get well because you are going to need him fully recovered. Make sure he's comfortable and resting so he can start feeling better this weekend. Trust me you'll glad you did post-op.

Good luck, a new healthier you is about to shine.
