Main Entry: en·abler

Pronunciation: \i-ˈnā-blər, -bəl-ər\

Function: noun Date: 1615:

one that enables another to achieve an end ; especially : one who enables another to persist in self-destructive behavior (as substance abuse) by providing excuses or by making it possible to avoid the consequences of such behavior

food ADDICTION

Food addiction manifests itself in the uncontrollable craving for excess food that follows the ingestion of refined carbohydrates, primarily sugar and flour substances that are quickly metabolized and turned into sugar in the bloodstream.

Due to those uncontrollable cravings, a food addict's quality of life deteriorates when he or she eats sugar, flour or wheat. It can deteriorate physically, emotionally, socially and/or spiritually.

If any of the following symptoms are familiar to you, you may be a food addict:

Physical Symptoms of Food Addiction

• Do you think you cannot control your intake of food, especially junk food or high sugar foods?

• Have you tried different diets or weight loss programs, but none has worked permanently?

• Have you found yourself vomiting, using laxatives, diuretics, or exercising a lot to avoid a weight gain after you have eaten a lot?

Many food addicts are obese and have tried numerous methods for weight control (diets, drugs, surgery, etc.) yet nothing has created a permanent solution. Other food addicts have never been obese. Their physical weight has been controlled by extreme measures such as excessive exercise, purging through vomiting or laxatives (bulimia), or the severe and unhealthy limiting of food substances(anorexia). No matter which version of food addiction fits you, all of these symptoms become more severe with time and eventually lead to physical problems that can create an early and sometimes painful death.

Emotional Symptoms of Food Addiction

• Do you find yourself feeling depressed, hopeless, sad or ashamed about your eating or your weight?

• Do you find yourself eating when you are upset or reward yourself with food when you do something good?

• Have you ever noticed after eating sugar, flour, or wheat that you become more irritable?

Food addicts notice that their emotions become more severe, intense, or unreasonable when eating the addictive substances. For many food addicts, emotional life may deteriorate into despair, depression, or thoughts of suicide.

Social Symptoms of Food Addiction

• Do you eat in private so no one will see you?

• Do you avoid social interactions because you feel you do not look good enough or do not have the proper fitting clothes to wear?

• Do you steal other people’s food?

• Are you more interested in what food is served at social gatherings than looking forward to the warmth of being with the people attending?

A food addict’s social life is affected by intense obsessive thinking about food. Making eye contact with people and taking an interest in developing friendships or intimate relationships become secondary to locating and eating addictive foods. Food addicts often hide or steal foods and eat in secret.

May I be so bold to suggest that those who justify and seek permission/absolution with regards to their drug of choice are the same ones who thought WLS was a cure? That the sleeve would do the fighti

You're right. Depending on what support you're looking for this site can be either good or bad for us. For me, I need the slap in the face, tear me apart reality that slipping up is not an option.

Me too, only we toasted the bread.

Oh and my recent pre-sleeve vice? Honey butter and Nutella on toast. So totally yummy!

Ooooh, I've never had Nutella and since I've never partaken, everyone who has just says to STAY AWAY and not go there. My oldest DD has a peanut allergy so there are lots of things we don't buy, Nutella being one of them. Most of the nut-alternative spreads (like Sunbutter) she isn't actually allergic to but it's TOO CLOSE to peanut butter for her liking, so we just don't bother with most of the alternatives.

The ONE thing that she can tolerate is cookie butter...go figure. And I don't recommend trying it. It has little to no nutritional value and goes down real nice. It's really good on pretzel sticks dipped right into the container and fed directly to the mouth.

Not that I've tried that or anything... ^_^

Nutella is without a doubt, laced with crack cocaine. There is no other explanation for its siren call. I haven't had it in months because I know once I start, I may not stop until I've figured out how to stick my tongue straight into the jar and lick out the sides. Yes it will take away all your dignity and pride.

I was just telling my 5:2 girls the other day the one food sadness I have is that before surgery EVERY morning I would have a peanut butter, Ezekiel bread and banana sandwich.,

That and a hot cup of coffee....

I miss taking a bite and sipping coffee in between to "wash" it down.

Sad right?

What I really miss is the one small biscotti I used to dip into my morning coffee. It was my excuse for "well I can't take my pills on an empty stomach". Seriously, the lies we tell ourselves just to get a little sugar into ourselves! That may be one of the few things I still crave.

But we don't buy the biscotti anymore and although my husband threatens to make them from time to time, every time he brings it up, I distract him with a long list of honey dos....I wonder how long before he catches on? :P

I used to eat mayonnaise sandwiches :P

Miracle Whip with potato chips on Wonder bread, here. Loved them.

Am I the only one that ate peanut butter and honey sandwiches daily?

I had one of these just yesterday on fresh honey whole wheat rolls I made for Thanksgiving #1.

Ok I have to stop you here... As the op of this thread I realized it jumped the shark long ago and I accept that. But there are certain things I will not tolerate!

Miracle whip??? Wtf?? That is not mayo!

I will overlook the Wonder bread because..well it has it's place. I wouldn't eat a fried bologna sandwich on anything else. But you better get your miracle whip talking azz outta here! :P

OMG, Miracle Whip was my staple food (if it qualifies as being a food). My all time favorite with Velveeta (if it qualifies as being a food) and Miracle Whip. I had distended my stomach on many occassion with that combination.

Food porn discussions are not a good thing for me. It gets my head spinning ...

Seriously.

I'm outta here.

Yeah they don't do me any good either (reference my original posts)

Oh and you are right Miracle whip and Velveeta do not qualify for food :)

I love miracle whip and sweet pickle samiches .. Add a slice of bolony and I'm in heaven

Peanut butter, banana, and marshmallow fluff...mmmmmmm

I have never tried Miracle Whip??!! Is it that bad?

Okay I'm now starving so I am going to change the topic away from food to a sad fact. two sad facts actually.

Sad fact 1. I shank. A whole damn inch. Apparently I'm only 5'5 now so it will take even longer for me to be normal weight.

Sad fact 2. My wrists shrank. So much for measuring your frame size by encircling your wrists no matter how much you weight blah blah. I am now closer to being a medium frame than I was before. So now it will take even longer for me to be normal weight.

Ugh.

Oh Sad Fact 3. I don't feel like worklng and I really need to! My kids are both home and I just want to hang out with them but the carpet is getting cleaned, all the furniture is moved around and really we're just going to have to leave the house in the cold and go somewhere and I need by breakfast shake and I have the whinies.

oh and i have a flare up and am having to wear special fingerless gloves for arthritis and so I can't type for shite.

Well if we can't talk about food porn let's talk about something that really matters.....staples.

When we went hiking yesterday we almost got lost! But then I remembered that I had been pooping out stables along the way! so we followed the silver brick road all the way back to the car!
