I have gone through so many tests required by my surgeons, stuff I never thought I'd do, but my new fear is wondering if I will be required to have a urine catheter while in the hospital. I know it may seem silly, but it's frightening me. Does anyone know if its normal to have one? Thank you, Jen

Talk to your doc and see if he or she requires one. If you do, it will be put in when your asleep and will probably be pulled as soon as you can walk the few steps to the bathroom. You got this!

I was so worried about that too they told me when I woke up after surgery if I didn't go to the bathroom before that night (like 4 or 5 hrs) or they would put one in so I defined made myself walk to the bathroom

I had one - it was put in while I was asleep so it was no big deal. They pulled it the next morning and I had to pee before I could leave. It really wasn't bad- didn't hurt to have it removed. It just felt very weird. I was glad I had it- didn't have to worry about getting to the bathroom the day of surgery. And I would have needed to go a lot! The IV fluids were crazy. The catheter bag kept filling up.

They told me I had one but it was put in after I was out and taken out before I woke up. I was worried about it too, but with everything else you are going through that day it is just a little blip on the radar.

This is what I most dread about my surgery. I have my final pre-op meeting with my surgeon on Wednesday and I am going to try to negotiate the catheter being in and out while I am knocked out. I will walk out of the OR after the surgery if they let me wake up with out that.

Yes! I was thankful for the catheter. I peed so much it would have been crazy trying to get to the bathroom. I was so out of it on drugs. The one walk was so much.

I didn't even have a catheter for surgery! He said he wouldn't bother since it was only 1.5 hours. In recovery room I had to pee so badly. They put me on the bedpan, I couldn't use it, it's quite unnatural to pee laying down. I begged them to let me get up, they told me no. Once I got in my room I was immediately up with help and walked to the bathroom. I was in some serious pain but I didn't care, I had to pee! I got up a few times that evening/night to pee, nothing too bad. You'll be fine either way

I would rather get up 30 times when sore and tired than have a catheter... I have had to pee bad before but waited three hours to have home court advantage

I wonder how this surgery will compare to gallbladder surgery. I know it is more involved internally, but I believe the incisions are similar. When I had that I did not have a catheter.I recall getting ready to leave, there was no overnight stay, it was hard, but doable. Crap, I do not want one! Seems so humiliating, and I have done more humiliating things in the last 4 months than in my whole life, I am not kidding.

Yep I agree. I was glad to have it. It doesn't hurt and actually helped me because I was so groggy afterward.

Don't be scared it is nothing! Getting blood pressure taken hurts more.

I was silently petrified of getting a catheter, I didn't want to say anything though.

I woke up with out one, Although they were going to put one in if I didn't urinate within 6 hours after surgery. everything was fine though.

I was very worried about this as well. I found that once I was awake post op, I didnt even feel it! I was glad I had it because I had some bad left side pain and getting up and down as many times as that bag filled up wouldve been tough. When they removed it I didnt even feel it. Once it was out I was up to the bathroom all day long. Kinda annoying with all the iv fluids!

I had more internal pain than with my gallbladder, but with pain meds, it was fine. Try not to worry about the catheter. Talk to your surgeon, you may not even need one. Remember, your team are health professionals, and nobody thinks twice about catheters, so don't feel embarrassed. I was zonked when they took mine out...don't even remember it. I was honestly more focused on getting ice chips for my dry mouth.

I had a catheter when I had my hysterectomy I was out when that put it in and I was grateful for it after surgery. They took it out the next day and there was no pain at all. Felt a little strange but absolutely no pain...
