Metformin post surgery

Recommended Posts

OK, I was put on metformin a few months prior to surgery. No real diag, my doc just realized that another doc was going to look at me and decided that it would be good to make it look like he was doing something for me (I wish i was kidding about that). Needless to say, I am in the market for a new doc....Anyway, I went off a few weeks prior to surgery and I was still loosing. I hit a stall at 3 weeks post op. The scale would not move at all, not even an ounce. I got very frustrated and shared my food log and weight log with my NUT and she said it looked like I was doing everything right. she then ques me on the metformin. I told her i wasn't taking it. Based on my blood, including the one where they look at the 4 month history and I was pre-diabetic. So my NUT told me to go back on the Metformin. I went on it on Friday, and finally after a 2 weeks stall, I lost 2.5lbs. I am just a little concerned being on it post-surgery. Has anyone else had any dealings with this drug post-sugery?

I haven't had a Metformin since the day after surgery. All you did was hit the dreaded 3-week stall like almost everyone else on this board, I doubt that the Metformin had anything to do with you losing weight again (I'm not a doctor so take that for what it's worth).

Personally, start tracking your glucose every day (twice a day if possible) if you aren't already and show it to your doctor and insist you be taken off of it asap if you don't need it. There's a risk of it driving your glucose too low once you've lost enough weight.

This is something you should be working with your Dr. on.,. It depends on your glucose levels if you can get off. I was type 2 and on 4 meds.. I have now dropped down to one - Metformin.. I have lost 90+ lbs and have another 40-50 lbs to go.. I hope to be able to get off all diabetes meds when I am done losing but will have to wait and see..

Bottom line, is if glucose is not high, you should be able to get off the med.. A Dr is more qualified to diagnose your med needs in my opinion.

yeah, almost everyone hits the 3 week stall. You didn't need to change anything, just wait it out. You will stall. It lets your body catch up to your weightloss. Your loss most likely had nothing to do with the metformin.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
