I fell & injured my shoulder & tail bone. My PCP wanted to prescribe me a anti-inflatory. I told her I could not have NSAIDS. I don't understand why? Can I not have them for the rest of my life or just shortly after surgery. What do you do when you have a injury?

I got kidney stones 3 months post op and was given them. They told me it was just right after surgery but then my book from the doctor says forever. Sorry I am not much help. I was confused about this too.

The reason why you can't have them is that they are very hard on your stomach and can cause ulcers which would be very detremental to us. Our stomach is now so small and produces less stomach acid to break up the medication; hence resulting in an ulcer. I asked my surgeon about an anti-inflammatory(prednisone) and he said don't take it more than 5 days. I wouldn't want to risk something happening to my stomach.

Different surgeons have different views and rules on this, as you will find if you search for this topic on this forum.

My surgeon allows NSAIDS. I am on the highest strength of prescription NSAIDS and have been since three weeks post-op, taking two doses daily with no ill effect whatsoever. I am one year out.

This is a touchy subject... In was sleeved because it have an autoimmune disease and have to take nsaids... Now my surgeon says I can never take them. I didn't meet with my surgeon before preop and that was for another 45 seconds. The 6 month preop diet I saw apns... When she told me no nsaids ever I told her I wouldn't be able to have the surgery... She then told me about the sleeve and Medicare just started paying for it... They sent me to my rheumatologist and he approved sleeve only, because you CAN take nsaids after surgery... Funny if you Google it, it shows taking nsaids as a pro of this surgery! Frustrating!

I just returned from my 4 week post-op appt and discussed this very thing with my surgeon. He stated that is the beauty of the sleeve...you can take NSAIDS. Which totally (and pleasantly) surprised me because I thought they weren't allowed.

But as we all well know....every surgeon is different.

That's what I need... I have a disease called ankylosing Spondylitis and have to take mobic.. Now surgeon says I can't... I imagine I will! Got an appointment with rheumatologist and surgeon same week! We will see who wins! I did my homework and I know that's the benefits if this surgery and why I had it instead of the RNY

Hi - my wife has this disease also. It can be so debilitating at times. She is taking remacaid (sp?), but she has also tried embrel in addition to hydrocodone / prednisone in the past. Are you able to talk to the rheumatologist about these other pain meicine options that are not NSAID? Remacaide has really made a quality of life difference for my wife. it is relatively new and is mouse protein! kind of strange considering she gets mouse Protein infused every 6 weeks, but hey, she can do so many more things now without pain. By the way, my wife is going to have VSG in a few months and her VST name is pheonix79 if you want to message her about pain medicine options.

I too have RA, and my surgeon told me that if I was going to need to take NSAIDS now and again, to make sure the I am taking Pepcid or Prevacid (spelling???) twice a day. She those medications will help protect my stomach lining against the harshness of the medications.

It seems that all doctors are different in what they suggest and dot suggest though.

Rheumatologist tells me mobic or other nsaids will slow progression of disease. My upper spine and neck have already fused and I can't stand up straight... I fear further progression.

Yeah, remacaid is very pricy. Fortunately, my current insurance covers it 100% (pay extra per premium to get nice coverage). Previous insurance for previous employment was not so nice @ $500 per treatment. Was painful in the wallet. Best of luck to you on using NSAID to help with slowing RA progression. Such an unfortunate disease for people to get. Both of my wife's sisters also got it early in life.

I have ankylosing spondylitis too and I'm about sick of this tylenol! That does nothing for my inflammation!

Have you tried Remicare? If you go to the remicade website, they off a discount to people who need remicade. It's like $50/infusion, depending on if you have a deductible. My rheumy wanted me to take remicade but the first couple infusions are like $200 then it goes down to $50 so I said I would wait and keep taking my enbrel until I become a nurse...
