I did as someone suggested and sent my PA an email and copied the surgeon asking about a sleep study and possibly a heart problem.

I received an email this afternoon from my PA stating I would be getting a call from the hospital for a sleep study and for me to have my cardiologist send them a letter describing my carotid Stenosis issue. She stated that they maybe my two co-morbs that I need!

Within the hour, I got my sleep study set up for this Saturday at 9:00pm. I am so nervous because I stay up all night cause I can't sleep, so I am afraid I will be up all night just staring at the walls!

What were your sleep study's like? Were you able to sleep?

I slept better than I thought. I just hated sleeping on my back.

Omg! You have to sleep on your back? I can't breathe laying on my back!

They wouldn't let me sleep on my stomach. Side was okay...

I could not but do not sleep on my stomach. I was able to and at one time encouraged to sleep on my side. There is a TV, take your ipod, a book or something else to distract you too. It is not that bad. The wires are a little annoying at times but not bad.

I'm not sure if my surgeon requires a sleep study yet but honestly this is the test I am most worried about! I suffer from horrible insomnia and there is no way I can fall asleep in a strange place-especially without taking something to help me sleep!

Only thing I can suggest is to discuss with your doctor.

I had a home study that was negative however my dr wants an in-house hospital one.... My insurance denied due to home study being negative... The specialist said 100% sure I have apnea. Nothing has been booked for sleep study but surgery is booked for 3/14... Hope this does not change my surgery date

I've been using a CPAP for about 15 years, and I couldn't sleep without it. I thought I'd use this question to say a few things.

For the sleep study, they connect sensors to your legs, head, and various other places, and then tell you to have a good nights sleep. LOL. Fortunately, you don't have to sleep long for them to get enough data for results. Once they measure the apneas, they may fit you with a CPAP to calibrate it for you. Once they did that for me, I fell into a deep sleep immediately. I was very sleep deprived.

This was done a long time ago, so I don't know if the procedures have changed, or how they vary from place to place.

About the CPAP. I know people have a lot of trouble with the mask, they feel claustrophobic, etc. The right mask is critical. There are many different styles, and it's worth it to find one that's right for you. The therapist will give you the one they like. What do they know? They're not using it. I personally use the SWIFT LT with nasal pillows. It's very lightweight and non-confining. cpap.com has many different masks that you can research.

Finally, My sleep apnea was debilitating. I fell asleep in meetings and suffered migraines. That has all cleared up.

I had mine done this past Saturday night. Yes, Redcardinal, that is still the way it is done. I don't sleep good anywhere but home. But, they hooked up sensors to my head, face, one on each side of my chest and two on each leg (for leg movement). I could sleep on my side, but had trouble going to sleep. After an hour, they put the cpap on me the tested me with it for a while. It was very simple. I would think that all dr's should test this, especially since it is important to how you do under anesthesia and how you awake after it. I was ready to go home and get some sleep. Lol......

I cannot begin to stress how important that sleep study is preop. It's a big deal when you're in recovery and no longer intubated.

It is very under diagnosed. Snoring isn't the only symptom and it doesn't have to be present to have sleep apnea.

I was not comfortable at my sleep study (it was hard because of the new surroundings and all these random wires they put on you). I am a stomach sleeper and because of all the wires forcing me to sleep on my back or side it was next to impossible to sleep, I managed about three hours. The staff said I tossed and turned alot. Overrall it was a weird experience and I am soooooo happy I do not have to do it again. It was so uncomfortable.

Well I am done with my sleep study! I could not get comfortable for anything!! Woke up several times and took me awhile to fall back asleep. The last time I fell asleep I was dreaming it was over and the tech was giving me my instructions to get the gunk out of my hair....until he actually DID wake me up...lol!

But overall it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be....

So this is over and the PA should have my cardiologist's letter, so hopefully I will have some co-morbs soon! I do have my fingers crossed!
