I'm was sleeved on the 21st also and I too started back smoking, as a matter of fact I never quit, I hate that I have this awful addiction. I know better and yes smoking does effect our bodies ability to heal, it also increases the risk of pulmonary embolism.

Quitting smoking was one of the hardest things I did, I hope you both have success giving it up. I know what helped me not do it was talk about how badly I wanted to do it.

Your becoming healthy with your weightloss and now is the perfect time to quit so try whatever means you can!

It's supposed to reduce you're recovery time.

Also, I was told it makes you more prone to ulcers, which isn't nice in your small stomache.

I've been smoking for 17 years. I quit a month before my surgery, and am coming up on my 4th month of being smoke free. It's been so hard to overcome. But I do feel so much better.

I was sleeved June 11th, and I never quit. It does increase healing time, increase the risk of ulcers, and for me, increases the rate at which I get heartburn. Don't get me wrong, I did try to quit for surgery, but it just didn't work out for me. I'm still trying to quit, but it's the hardest thing I've ever tried to do. I wish you luck in giving it up. We made the choice to have surgery to be healthy, so smoking is kind of negating that choice.

My doctor would not schedule my surgery unless I quit. I had to have 2 urine tests, one 2 weeks after I quit and another a few weeks ago.my surgery is Tuesday. I would be a fool to a start up again as it is I don't like the noises I hear come from my lungs without smoking. If you can manage to quit I think you would be glad. I used chantix

I never quit before surgery but cut way back on the amount. My surgeon fussed a bit but I told him that I could not give up 2 things at once, food and cigs, unless he wanted a mental case on his hands. I was not being overly dramatic, I am an anxious person and have the occasional panic attacks to where I think I am literally dying. I tried chantix, had an allergic reaction to it so thats a no go. It also made me crave the strangest things. Anyway, I do intend to completely quit by one year post op, but not because a doc says to, because I want to. Good luck to you!

i never quit my docs all know and never told me to stop I just take a extra fast tab for longer.

They did say to me one thing at a time and when I want to quit speak to them and they will give me any help I need but I never got raked over the coals for it not pre or post op never even a mention of slow healing or issues like ulcers because of it.

I never quit either, my pulmonary test and chest X-ray were great, my surgeon never said anything about quitting. I healed great, not one problem at all, I have tryed to quit 6 times in my life, quit for 6 years Started back up. Worse thing I could have ever did,thanks to my ex-husband:(!

Honestly I think those of you who haven't quit should. There is a reason why you wanted to have the sleeve, and that was to get healthy and live longer. To continue smoking is no different from being that fat obese person you were before. You are still killing yourself, so why go through the surgery if you weren't going to change your habits? I use to smoke, and smoked for 10 years, I definitely didn't want to die soon in my life cause of obesity. So I got the surgery and vowed to stop smoking for my own sake! So I don't waste my time. Quitting smoking I must say had been a easy process for me. There are other things you can substitute smoking for. When you have the urge to smoke, put on some running shoes and go work out. It's pretty sad to see people use so many excuse to why they have quit. Honestly to the person asking the question, if you have to question yourself about smoking again, maybe you should of second question the surgery as well. -Just saying!

For all the smokers out there I am gonna say something on our behalf.

We the bad bad naughty smokers bite our tongues on this subject a lot never daring to say they still do because we get told off any time its brought up or we admit we smoke still.

We get told we never should have got the op if we are just gonna keep on smoking.

Well to be frank its utterly annoying to constantly hear!

People cheat all the time on the new healthy life people keep going on about and bashing smokers with.

they drink coffee/tea/soda eat candy/ice cream/chips/fast food/slider food, they don’t work out they don’t take meds they drink alcohol and the list goes on and on!

But everyone comes down on smokers like we are the antichrist for daring to not give up or if they do for picking the habit back up.

I didn’t have my sleeve to stop smoking I had my sleeve for my weight problems that were effecting my health, it has nothing to do with me smoking my sleeve was not because I wanted to become a vegan health nut who was a purest and only lived a green healthy life.

I had my sleeve like pretty much everyone else as a tool for weightloss.

I was never told to stop and still aint now.

You don’t know a persons smoking habits it could be 1 a day or 500 you take in more crap form car pollution a day than you do if you smoked 1 cigarette a day so anyone jogging out there in the road suck up a nice lung full of smog while you do it.

I smoke roughly 20 a day out of anyone’s interest with an extra filter tip I add on and the lightest you can smoke 1mg of tar 0.1mg of nicotine and 1mg carbon monoxide in each cigarette.

Yes I am annoyed and no I am not feeling guilt for smoking if I did I would never post I do smoke I am actually smoking while I type this!

I am annoyed the smokers are jumped on by everyone but other smokers (and I don’t mean ex smokers) and spoken to how they are some times by some people.

This isn’t a quit smoking forum or an antismoking forum give it a rest!

Your right Sassypants, this is not a forum for antismoking but it is a forum for those who have had or will havr the sleeve. Angelofmercy had a valid question and I believe it was answered. An ur also right, smokers do get bashed and judged alot here. I smoked for 20 yrs a quit a month before surgery. Not because I was forced to, but because I wanted all of me healthy, not just my weight. I wanted no addictions holding me back. Food or cigs. Anyways, I said all that to say this, not all of us cheat or sabatoge our health and some of us just want complete freedom from the things killing us. But I in no way would ever bash u for smoking

U keep doing u and what feels right to u. No judgement here. We r all human. I wish the best for u and anyone else struggling with an addiction. its a very hard thing to overcome. Take care girl and keep doing u!

This isn't a stop smoking forum, your right. But I'm not answering your question. Also everyone got this tool to be healthy and yea you didn't sign up to quit smoking, but why sign up to get healthy with your weight issues when your simply just aren't healthy from smoking? Anyway, point is you can do as you please and hat your body what's, but this is just my input on smoking after surgery.
