Your life never will be the same again. Look around the site a bit and you will see that not only are none of us even close to the same, but that we would NEVER want to go back.

I do understand being anxious about a possible leak. I'm not sure what the doctor told you, but what I know about it is that yes, having a leak is a possibility, but I don't believe that it happens very often. Being sleeved is a surgery and like any surgery, things can happen. I did a little research on this and here is what I found:

The reported major complication rates are comparable or less than the RYGB (Roux en Y gastric bypass). The major complications of Gastric Sleeve are related to the pouch and the staple lines. Reported leak rates were 2.2%, bleeding rates 1.2%, and stricture rates 0.63%. 30 day mortality rate is reported as 0.19%.

2.2% is a very small percentage chance of a leak happening, but yes, it can happen. If a leak does occur, then what they would do is to do an additional surgery to fix the leak and would probably put in a drain for a while. Is it fatal? Yes, but if it is caught in time you would be fine. I do know for a fact that most, if not all surgeons, will do a leak check right after the staples are used to close the stomach, or the next day. Some do both.

My wife had this surgery one month ago exactly and she is doing great! I will have the surgery a week from today and I look forward to it. I am well aware of the risks, and I trust the medical personnel doing my surgery.

As for your life changing, yes, that will happen too. You will have some restrictions. No more carbonated beverages is one. Another is that you'll have to change your eating habits. You have to remember that any weight loss surgery is a tool. You are still responsible for changing your eating habits and exercising.

I encourage you to look around this site, and feel free to ask questions. Remember that the only non intelligent question is the one not asked! Be sure to do further research on the internet. There are a number of sites dealing with the sleeve surgery specifically and weight loss surgery in general.

It is a life changing decision and one that you need to go into with both eyes open.

My Doctor told me that having the surgery is not only a life but lifestyle changing experience that will test every bit of will and determination you have. That is the scariest part. The surgery is nothing.

Yes there are risks, but they are minimal. Very minimal compared to how long you may live if you continue on as you are now.

As far as the risk of your stomach leaking after surgery, the odds of that happening are very very small. Your Doctor will staple, clamp, and glue you. And the morning after surgery they will take an Xray to make sure nothing is leaking.

Your life is definitely going to change - the obvious one is weight loss is going to lead to more energy and more activities, more confidence, among other things.

It will also change in your habits. You will not be eating the same junk food. You will not be eating the same quantity - your portions will be much smaller to fill you (which saves on the grocery budget!)

You will need to be on supplements for the rest of your life - Multivitamin, Iron, B12 and Calcium Citrate, but I think you'll find most if not all of your prescription meds will also go away.
