Why Am I Starving 5 Days Post Op?

I'm just wondering why I'm feeling so starving! I had surgery 5 days ago 4/18 and I have had off and on hunger pains every day...not mild ones either, they are very strong. I don't feel like it's head hunger because I'm not even thinking about food or even wanting it. I am following all my instructions including taking prilosec for acid but I feel I have a constant hunger pain in my stomach. Did anyone else experience this and did it get better when you moved onto soft foods?

Are you taking any antacids? Products like prevacid or nexium will cause the acid in the stomach to calm down and the hunger pains will subside. You can buy antacids like prevacid or prilosec OTC. This should help.

You may need to try a different acid medication. I had those same hunger pains. I was so confused because I was sure I shouldn't feel hungry. So I called the Dr. and she told me to change up the meds I was taking. You really don't feel hungry until a few months post op or more. I started off taking omeprazole which is prilosec but I was still having acid pain so I now take Ranitidine which is the generic zantac 75.. I was taking it 2 times a day. Now I am down to one a day. You should ask your Doctor and see what they say.

Thank you guys for your responses. I will definitely ask my doctor about the meds.

I guess I didn't read far enough before asking if your taking your antacids lol. I have heard of people taking more than one type and more than one dose also per day to control it. I hope you get some relief.

Gas pains cause the growling pain the Nurse told me to get GasX I had to take it after each meal and bedtime for a while along with the prilosec 40mg in AM. Good luck!

Thank you smileen, I will try that too...I was starting to wonder if that could be it too because it feels like trapped hunger pain unable to break up the way they normally do, so maybe It's just the gas.

Yes I have 5 day too and I am starving too but I can't even drink liquid .... I feel very full with one 1 or 2 oz all day and can't drink no more I am still in the hospital and I am scared.... I don't think is starving is what the call head hunger

No you are hungry and not the head hunger either. I had it for 3 weeks but it was frustrating becaus ei couldn't eat and I was extremely hungry. It got better once I could eat food but I get hungry every 4 hrs. Good news is a few bites does the trick!! It was very difficult and I found myself becoming depressed but I have since snapped out of it lol;) you are not alone!!
