Telling People & Any Regrets

Recommended Posts

Hey guys!

Been following this forum for a few weeks now, its what turned me into wanting the sleeve over the band!

I'm booked in for 13th of June, pending super approval (aussie system, borrow from retirement fund).

Just have a few quick questions :)

Does anyone have any regrets about doing it? Is there a different way you would have done it?

Im 26, 100kg, BMI of 34 - the minimum BMI here is 35 with dodgy blood pressure, cholestorol etc - so im scraping in with no major health problems - but, I still managed to get the OK from the doc after mentioning that it was riduculous to send me home to put on weight to prove a point (yayyyy!)

I'm concerned that this next 2 months will be an its ok to put on weight, but not ok to loose weight time - dont want that, but at the same time its unavoidable and ive never had the 'its ok to put on weight thing' before! I could just try to stay the weight I am, but im a yoyo person!

I've started telling a few close friends about what I plan to do, and most are wonderful, but some have been very 'thats cheating' - I dont see that it is, not like I get to sit on my bum and eat doughnuts after i've had it done, I still have to work at it.

Anyway, does anyone regret telling people? I want to tell because im really excited! But at the same time the cheating status isnt fun!

Any info would be great! Really appreciate it :D

Hello there fellow Aussie.

I havent hidden the fact that I had surgery from anyone that has asked. Before surgery I was a bit cagey about why I was going to hospital, keeping it to close friends and those that must know, ie boss etc.

Since surgery if I have been asked I have said the truth.

I am coming off a really high BMI (53) or 150 kgs, so most people that know me know how much I have been trying and failing for years and suffered many many exercise injuries.

And after loosing 52kgs, which puts me about where you are, most people have also seen the hard work I still have had to put in, working out twice a day and hard sessions. I dare anyone to say I took the easy way out.....this is not the easy way out.

Thanks AussieGirl - really appreciate it!

Def not the easy way out!

I think that might be the way I go too - just telling if they ask.

Part of me not wanting to keep it a secret is if there is someone like me, wanting to know why im dropping weight so fast etc and I say diet and excercise, they would be shattered when they dont get the results I do :)

I'm 21 months out from surgery and have ZERO regrets. There are challenging parts to life after surgery, I won't lie. But the little bumps here and there are nothing in comparison to the great changes in my life. The only thing I would have done is opt for surgery sooner!

I didn't tell many people for a long time because my husband is just very quiet about personal things like that. It actually made things sort of awkward with family and friends that didn't know, though, because everyone noticed I was eating much, much smaller portions and you can only get away with the excuse that you've just eaten a few times before people start to think you're anorexic or deathly ill.

Nowadays I tell everyone that asks how I lost the weight and I have no embarrassment about doing so. Sure, some folks think I cheated but I really don't care what they think. It was definitely work to choose to put the right foods in my mouth for the 17 months I was losing weight and if they can't see that, it's their problem and not mine.

Most of us do a "food funeral" prior to surgery. I wouldn't fret overmuch about it but at the same time I'd be careful not to build a habit that will be hard to break post op. The only thing I'd do is replace a meal here or there with a Protein Shake so you can get used to drinking them. They'll be necessary for a while after surgery. I still drink one nearly every day!

Best of luck, the next few months will fly by.

Hi Jazzie,

Welcome aboard :)

I honestly think that the pre-op diet on Opti-fast was the hardest part of the whole process. Surgery was painful but not as painful as I expected and I was prepared for it. The Opti-fast was just horrible, eatting that horrible food day in and day out, I was so glad when I could have Clear Liquids for some taste.

It will get better and once you are over your recovery period and back on normal food, this period will seem like a blip on the radar.

At 2 weeks out you are probably too close for a food funeral but it does help, mine was a night out with my friends where we ate soo much seafood, prawns, oysters, fish, crab, lobster...so yummm...And I can eat all these now, just not over indulge :)

Good luck with your surgery!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
