I'm scheduled to have my VSG in early November and my doctor said I should take 2 weeks off of work. I work in an office...nothing physical whatsoever. I doubt I can get that much time off work. I was told by the nurse that I'll only be in the hospital over night, but she also said to take 2 weeks off. Can those of you that had surgery tell me what a realistic recovery time would be? Thanks!

I ended up staying in the hospital for 2 nights...but I had a band to sleeve revision. The nausea was my worst part, but thanks to a great nurse/docs, it was kept under control. I then had to ride him 4 1/2 hours, so I was a bit sore from the ride. I spent the next two days sleeping off and on, but on the 3rd day I made myself get up and out and had no problems. I would give yourself a good 7 days from the time you leave the hospital to get used to your new stomach. Don't rush it!!!

I think two weeks AT LEAST. Try to get the two weeks. My doc told me 4 weeks off, no discussion. I also had a band removed and the sleeve done. I feel pretty good right now and think I might be able to return to work. But I'm really still exhausted from the surgery. Need sleep! I'm glad I have one more week off. I'm a teacher and need lots of energy for my day!

i had my surgery a week ago today... and i went back to work yesterday... i was totally fine and functional.. I also could not afford to take that much time off and i dont regret going back because i feel normal going back... i dont want to feel laid up longer then i have to... i do attribute my feel good because i walked ALOT post surgery... HOWEVER .. there is a little fatigue so just be careful!

I took a week off and was back at work after that. I have a cushy job, though. Sit in front of a computer most days. Sometimes I drive and visit clients.

They told me I would be overnight as well... I didn't feel well enough that next day, so they let me stay another night. No questions asked. I was definitely ready to go home the next day.

I took two weeks on the advice of my support group, doctor, and nutritionist and was glad I did. it's not just time for recovery, but to learn the eating/sipping routine. I felt ready to go back to work about day 12. When I returned to work the fatigue the first day was bad, but has gotten better. I am now 4 weeks out. I stayed 2 nights in the hospital and was glad to. It is really important to walk and do so regularily after your procedure.

Hi, Everyone heals differently but I think two weeks off is the minimum of time you should take off I'd suggest finding Protein drinks that you can drink now rather then post op. Get in the habit now of drinking those 2 1/2 liters a day and start walking now. Also start your Vitamins and take care of yourself no late nights, avoid stress, no craziness. The better your shape is pre-op the easier your recovery as a rule of thumb.
