Does anyone know a few good websites to find hard statistical data about complications? As far as there is a 1% chance of this or a 5% chance of that? I am not very internet savvy so any assistance would be appreciated! :thumbup:

I went to this website before I had my surgery done.

The thing is although Im sure your nervous and wanting to know everything including what are the chances something terrible will happen!?

You will have more complications in life being overweight then you will ever EVER having surgery.

Thank you for the links. I am more than willing to risk the complications for the benefits of the surgery. My concern is that right now my surgery is scheduled 24 days prior to my wedding. So I am trying to decide if the risks are worth taking before the wedding. Having the surgery scheduled when it is works best for work and making the life changes I am trying to make for us as a couple to make this successful. That is if everything goes well. If I get a complication and have to be in the hospital for several weeks that would obviously not be good for the wedding situation.

When I had my beginning appointments it was very positive regarding the timing and that they didn't think it would be a big deal to have it when it is scheduled. Today I got a call saying that the team had their mandatory meeting to discuss the case and now they wanted me to rethink the timing "just in case." So it made start to question my decision.

Just FYI, my surgeon has these sorts of stats for himself personally. Your potential surgeon probably will too. That's even better data, to have date from the person who will work on you. For example I was extremely happy that my surgeon had done 2,000 weight loss surgeries (all 3 kinds combined) with only one fatality, which happened to be an extremely high risk patient over 500 lbs with every comorbidity in the book. And his stats for leaks were 0.1%. This was so reassuring! Definitely see if you can get stats directly from any surgeon you are considering.

Like Christie my surgeon had his own stats...so its worth looking at yours, but keep in mind everyone is different.

I had a major surgery 5 months before our wedding 3 years ago, and I was one of the few with complications, - my fears about the day and honeymoon travel etc didn't make my recovery any smoother. Luckily I just got it sorted out in time to revoer for the big day and be cleared to travel long haul.

I know its probably not what you want to hear, but I would recommend seriously thinking about the date, and postponing it until after the wedding.A wedding day is SO special.

Should the unthinkable happen and say you were in hospital for a long time because of complications (someone on here has been in for 30 days with post op problems) do you have wedding insurance that would cover it?

If you do decide to go ahead with it then I would urge you to keep to everything they suggest - pre and post op diets to the letter. Try and get yourself in the best possible health before the op, not just for the op itself but for your recovery as well.

I sort of have to agree. You have waited this long. Besides, even if EVERYTHING goes by the textbook, don't you want to enjoy your wedding dinner and cake? I would not want to be eating mushies at my wedding or on my honeymoon. That's just me. Do what makes you happy. Follow your inner voice!

It really depends on how your recovery goes. I didn't have any complications, but had severe nausea and vomiting, which led to some dehydration til about 2-2.5 weeks out. I would not have been in shape for my big day. Good luck!

Honestly, I'd reschedule the surgery. Get married, then get sleeved. The extra 24 days aren't going to make that much of a difference, and it's one less thing to worry about!

Well, the big decision is made. We rescheduled for 7/28 which will be 4 days after the wedding. We are going to take our honeymoon in the winter when I am happy in a bathing suit! Can't wait to get in the losers bench!

Congratulations! Is your surgeon in TC? I think you'll be happy with your decision, since there is some variance to the recovery period. Good luck with the wedding!

Thanks! It will be a great day but the planning is stressful at times. My surgeon is at the University of Michigan hospital. I met some great people through the Munson program in TC but I have a shunt that has been treated at the U of M for the past 15 years. That sounds really bad but I haven't had any issues since 2001 so really it has been a while. Myself and my family would feel more comfortable with having surgery at U of M just in case something happens.

I think its a fab idea... it'll be stressful enough getting wed, we did it 3 yrs ago... and now at least you can enjoy that and then enjoy the honeymoon with your new slim bod!!
