does anyone know the stats on regaining weight after vsg surgery. I read a post somewhere where a woman was 3 years out... eating like a bird and exercising as her weight slowly climbs up. Anybody?

From what I know, weight regain is a concern with EVERY weight loss method. However, from what I understand, weight regain is much less of a concern with lap sleeve than with other surgeries (due to the hormonal/ghrelin changes), and also weight regain is much less with WLS in general than with diet and exercise.

Sorry it's not a simple "don't worry, it won't happen," but I think it's safe to say that if you're willing to do what you're supposed to do, your odds are pretty good.

I'm absolutly cool with the idea that if you don't eat right and exercise you will not be able to keelp off the weight. I just can't fathom the idea of eating like a bird and exercising everyday while I put it back on.

Just my 2cents on the topic of weight regain. I've read about a 10% "bounce back" after 3-5 years post-op. Eating like a bird, but what is that person eating. Is she eating 5 pringles or pounding back 5 Hershey kisses and then trying to burn 5000 calories at the gym? Then, it makes sense that she isn't going to lose, and if she isn't having her labs monitored, who knows what is going on with her metabolically. I hope that makes sense.

I gained 4-5 pounds last week while on vacation. I'll have it gone probably by Thursday.

I can see how people can regain, but when someone is exercising, and eating like a bird, it leads to think that there is an underlying cause that hasn't been diagnosed, or that person isn't being truthful with themselves.

It depends on the type of bird "eating like a bird" can mean eating 20-80% of your bodyweight for some birds! :scared0:

Seriously though, if you are maintaining a good balance of calories, good Protein etc. maintenance should not be that complex. Granted I am still pre-sleeve, but I can look back at every yo-yo diet failure and it has always been my choices that caused the failure. It is very important to look at the sleeve as a tool. Granted the sleeve may not be the best solution for everyone--some may need the malabsorbsion component of a bypass to be successful based on eating habits. I feel the sleeve will work best for me because my problem is that I have a bottomless pit of a stomach and overeat even when eating decent foods. In another thread someone mentioned making the right choices 95% of the time and allowing the 5% indulgence and that seems pretty wise.

Indeed. One fact that most people overlook is that losing weight is EASY. I can lose 10-30 pounds without even working too hard. A lot of it is switching to lower carbs and watching what I eat.

The problem is that keeping the weight off is next to impossible. That's what's so great about the sleeve; not only do you lose an amazing amount of weight amazingly fast (although TBH, I'd be very happy to lose it slower), the sleeve gives you a great set of tools for keeping the weight off. By changing your hormonal chemistry, by producing a restrictive (but not malabsorptive) anorexia, and by avoiding all of the foreign body complications of the lap band, the VSG provides a near-ideal tool for losing the weight and keeping it off long-term. It's still too new to tell for sure, but many bariatric surgeons are calling the lap sleeve the new "gold standard" for weight loss surgery.

Honestly, I wish the "weight loss industry" would go away, and be replaced by the "avoiding weight regain" industry. That would be more honest, and more healthy for all of us.

I just want to do it already!!!!

Very nice find. Just my option to follow here so take with a grain of salt--Based on this information and other facts on the bypass, the Duodenal seems to be a more effective bypass than the RnY -- but only for those who need malabsorbtion to achieve thier weight loss goals. With the DS you keep both stomach valves and get a sleeve as well--then the added bypass function. The good news for sleeve patients is you are completing step 1 of the DS proceedure--so if you need additional weight loss you can add the DS part 2 later. Some of the DS surgeons do this anyway for the extreemly obese patients to loose enough weight before safely being able to complete part 2.

Of course the DS proceedure has additional risk, so I would think starting with the sleeve would be a smart choice. Here is alink comparing the two types of bypass DS vs. RNY

Hello. First-time poster here. Had sleeve surgery February 19, 2010. Lost 20 pounds in 5 weeks. Was on blood pressure meds and was taken off due to much better readings. Then the water weight pounded on me. I've gained 6 pounds since getting off the Benicar (bp meds) a week ago. I'm so discouraged. Not losing anymore. Eating the same. I am a huge fan of fish...eat it daily. Very few carbs. Hoping it's the water weight gain and it will even off soon and I'll start losing again. I drink water all day long...I mark my cup with a marker as I drink all day making sure I drink plenty! I know it's water weight gain because Benicar is a diuretic...and suddenly I am no longer taking one...plus I can't get my rings on my fingers! AND my eyes are SO puffy! Thanks for listening!

It sounds like all in all your doing great. Your right about that 6 lbs. It's most certainly Water. I know that these things still mess with our heads... even when logically we know that its not fat, just water. Hang in there. Your body will let go soon enough.

Welcome and congrats on your surgery! Hopefully it is just a matter of your body adjusting to the reduction of meds and the new sleeve. Not real familiar with high BP tho so can't comment specifically. Good Luck! Sounds like you are off to a great start!
