Couch 2 5K

Cross posted from my blog:

So, as all of you know who follow my blog, I haven't been the best a the big E....yes, sad to say, but my exercise has been lacking. So, while surfing YouTube a few days ago, I noticed a lot of those who had WLS were trying/doing/completed this Couch 25k program. For those of you who aren't familiar with it, its a 9 week program that trains you to run a 5K. Its for beginners so I thought, well, I'm a beginner, I'll try it.

Lemme just start by saying that, its been more than 20 years since I have jogged. Now, mind you, the last time I jogged, my body was ripped like Britanny Spears (ok, maybe not that hot, but I was an athlete at least..ha ha) Sooooooo....the workout goes like this: work out 3 times a week, walking and running in intervals (more walking than running at first) for 30 minutes. You can download various podcasts with someone guiding you when to walk/jog. OK, I got my 3 sports bras on, my skin tight leggins, and my running shoes..I get on the treadmill and start, hmmm..as I'm warming up I'm thinkin I'm going to rock this workout!! HA HA HA. I can report that I DIDN'T QUIT, and I DID all 8 (was it 8? I coudn't count much less breathe) sixty second jogs...however, I was seriously sweatin, huffin & puffin...but I DID IT!!! I am so proud of myself, even though I was jiggling in places I didn't know a person could jiggle..lmao! I felt like my body just 'woke up'! I know tomorrow I will be looking for the Ben-Gay or Icy-Hot, but for now, I'm damn proud of myself!! Friday is my next workout day, so wish me luck and stay tuned!!

O.K. I jogged for 4 times of a minute each and walked for 3 minute segments and my right knee was calling me at the end. I have to be careful with that but I still work out 4 x a week. I saw Al Roker works out on his treadmill everyday and then ices one of his knees...humm do want to baby my knee, would hate to ruin it. Anyone else fear that? Anyone have an incline in the treadmill?

Another alternative to the Icy-Hot is Bio-Freeze. it is a cold rather than a hot treatment. Works great for my back, shoulders and neck.

I got the roll on from my chiropractor's office. I bought that size because it was easier to apply and small enough that I could take it on a plane. I do have my priorities! : )

Congrats on the working out! I need to start soon. I am starting to see some areas where the skin is hanging as the weight comes off. I also was an athlete a long long time ago. Went to state in track in high school and literally was playing volleyball in my mid 20's when I was pregnant with my first two kids. Now I can barely coach the elementary team! LOL

Good for you in getting back in the jogging mode. You are a lot younger than me and I bet you will be running marathons this summer!

You all are progressing so wonderfully. It's awesome!!! I will be two months out next week and I am running my first 10K on April 11, I'm so excited!!! I don't know what made me skip right over the 5K and attempt to take on a 10K from jump but.....I'm gonna do it! And you all will be doing them soon too.

BTW-- Attitudefree, what triathalon are u doing in september? I wanna do the L.A. Triathalon in October!!!! I'm completely stoked!

Thank you so much for posting about this! I uploaded it to my iPod this afternoon and I did my first day, week 1 today....in-place in the privacy of my dorm room! :w00t: I'm still super-self conscious since I live on a college campus & I don't really want all the really fit athletes watching me work out! Hopefully later this week, when I go home for Easter break, I can do it outside.

I've never been athletic in the slightest, but even at my pre-op evaluations in meetings with both the recreational therapist & physical therapist I told them I wanted to start jogging someday. I did that first one and it wasn't too bad at all! I'm actually sweating much less than when I do my Walk-away-the-pounds DVD for half an hour. Pretty happy that I finally talked myself into downloading it! Thanks again!

Thank you Itstime! I can do the 10K at about 1 hr. 20 min. currently, hopefully I can knock it down a little by the time the race comes (fingers crossed)
