First fill question

Recommended Posts

I have my first appt since my surgery coming up and was wondering if anyone got a fill at their first post op appt ? I have 0 restriction and could eat a horse at this point, I'm starving and feeling pretty discouraged that the band may not work for me. I know it's just an aide for my weight loss but I was at least hoping that I wouldn't feel so hungry.

I totally relate, I remember when I first was able to eat regular foods and I didn't have any restriction and was so scared the band wasn't going to work for me. But once you get restriction you definitly feel a difference and get full faster so I hope that alleviates some of your worry. The problem for me is head hunger, wanting to eat even if I don't feel hungry. I have heard a lot of other people with the band talk about that as well and it is hard to get through for some.

I personally did get a fill at my first post-op appointment but it was a very small one. Other people I have talked to have gotten more of a fill though so I think it just depends on your surgeon. Wish you the best of luck and hope you can stay positive that the band will work for you, it just takes some time and willpower. I still struggle with the willpower piece, but am just trying to stay strong and work with myself on that. :)

Once you receive a few fills, the physical hunger (bandster hell) will get better. Please know that sometimes it takes several fills to really feel a difference.

Hang in there!

I have had my band for 7 yrs. My Dr actually decided to go with larger band for my, I don't recall his reasoning, but he gave me first fill during surgery. Of course I am not trying to give you medical advice, but you should definitely discuss the option of getting a fill at your visit. Are you familar with the zones? You want to be in the green zone and from what you describe you are in the red zone. Don't be discouraged, yes it is a tool, but it is a tool that really works if you keep up with your maintenance to stay in the green.

Thank you all for your advice!! I'm supposed to be on mushies but I physically am able to eat solid food no problem, I tried. But the mushies are not satisfying me at all. It's frustrating...

My Doctor doesn't give fills until 6 weeks post op. I go on May 21 and my surgery was April 3rd.

I was on 2 weeks pre op liquids, 2 weeks post op liquids, and no I am on 2 week of mushies before I can start solid food. I'm pretty sure I will have no problem eating solids either, although I haven't tried. I have been hungry, but I drink Water when it isn't time to eat. I think I got used to eating very little prior to surgery so it has been easier for me now. Were you on a pre op diet?

Good luck to you.

I did not expect the band to bring me instant satisfaction but I also did not expect to feel starving and wanting to eat like normal so soon. I was more curious as to what others have experienced.

I think it's normal for us all to feel that we should at least know the band is there once we've had the operation regardless of what we've read and regardless of what other people say. And that we shouldn't feel hungry I was starving and for ages though, this hasn't worked)

We expect to feel this foreign body in us. But reality is most people wont know its there or have restriction for quite a while.

I had my band in September 2012 I have just had recently my 6th fill and now I actually feel that I am in the Green zone. I definitely know my band is there now. so it does take quite a while but I promise you it will be a great tool used right.

Good luck xx. Try joining My Fitness Pal on your phone or computer too. Loads of bandsters on there and lots of lovely support from friends you will make xxx

After hearing all the trouble everyone is having with hunger, I am really happy to say that I totally expected to be starving after surgery and before my first fill (I had my surgery on 4/11 and don't see my surgeon until 5/14) I have had a touch of "head hunger" (seeing my hubby cook a nice juicy steak on the grill) but other than that, I get full so easy on pureed food and very little of it, that it is great. I've dropped 26 pounds already which is more than I could have ever expected in such a short time frame. Good luck to you all who are having problems now. I sincerely hope things turn around or you at least are able to keep things under control with the hunger thing until your fills.

I agree I got band on April 18th and I fill like a I am starving. I don't fill any restriction at all, I expected to feel at least a little.

I also thought that I would automatically wake up from surgery not ever hungry again. Guess I didn't read the part of manual that talk about finding the "sweet spot". It took until my 3rd fill (4 mths post op) to find that spot. The it was like magic, the weight started melting off. Before that, I ate just as I had before surgery. Must be the reason why I didn't lose any weight the first 4 mths!

And yes, I got a fill on the first appt. He put 5cc in my 14cc band. My doc wait 6 weeks between, so my 3rd fill was like 4 mths post op.

Good luck!

Marci

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
