I know from the past when you loose weight real fast you get really bad breathe. Does anyone know of something we can take with a lapband to help out this situation. I work with all women and I would hate for them to run away from me while chatting at the water cooler!!:think

Seminole, this really isn't a big problem with the band because--in general--we don't lose weight "really fast." I think there were just a couple of points during my active weight-loss phase when I was in ketosis (which is what causes the bad breath) and breath mints were adequate to the task.

I don't know--did lots of people out there experience this? Chime in!

I have "protein breath", lol. The worst is after these wonderful coffee-protein drinks I ordered, lol (AchievOne). Yum! I've been using breath mints or Listerine strips or gum. (Yeah, I know, don't swallow it!)

I've just recently had a lot of dental work done and my teeth lasered, and that alone did wonders for bad breath. I was getting gingivitis, even though I'm faithful about going to the dr. She prescribed a medicated mouth wash that is prescription only and it is marvelous for bad breath. I used it for about a mo., but now that I've had my gums planed(talk about painful) and my teeth lasered I find I no longer have any problems at all with bad breath. I am fanatical about brushing and flossing after each and every meal now, as I don't want to go through that gum planeing ever again. It was extremely painful and I had to have each quadrant done on separate visits. It was worth it though. I just had my teeth lasered and they are as white as if I was 16 again. I'm so proud of them and want to keep them this way. I sure hope surgery doesn't change it.

Why does this surgery cause bad breath? I'm just curious.

When I was losing weight faster, in the beginning I did get a funny taste in my mouth. But I didn't have bad breath that I knew of. I drank my water, brushed my teeth as I normally did and went about my life. I always had gum in my purse, just in case but I didn't really need it ( I don't think). No one ever mentioned it or indicated that I had bad breath. I tried to check, you know breath into your hand........never noticed bad breath.

Sometimes our body does go into ketosis and we get bad breath, but I never experienced it.

I would think standard oral hygeine, adequate hydration and a just in case mouth aid like gum or hard candy should help you be prepared. Be careful with mint, though because mint has been known to make the band tighter and cause increased stomach acid.

There is a great product out there and it's called Therabreath. There is a toothpaste and a mouth rinse. I got it at an Eckerd's and they probably have it at CVS. My daughter has a problem with"cheese balls" by her tonsils and this has helped tremendously.

What are the cheese balls caused from can they get rid of them I think I have the same thing

I thought the breath thing was primarily the GB people... Some Gastric Bypassers have the 'Breath of Death' due to their unique metabolic situation. Now I know to have mints on hand. Hopefully it will be less severe than what GBers have, it was on my top twenty list for why I opted for the band.

I had rotten breath only during the liquid phase of the recovery, and i had a revolting khaki green build up of slime on my tongue, lol. I could brush it off with my toothbrush. The dietician explained that not eating solid food meant your tongue didnt get exfoliated and hence the build up which could lead to bad breath, also that possibly I was in ketosis at times. But since I went onto mushies I've never had the problem again.

Since then I've never lost more than 1.5kg in a week anyway and now it's fairly crawling, so no risk of ketosis.

I noticed the bad taste lingering in my mouth lately...probably smells, but I can't smell it. I stole my husband's scope to swish my mouth out after eating. Today I bought a month's supply of listerine strips for my purse. I have also noticed a strange thick coating on my tongue.

I was in an office meeting the other day and it occured to me suddenly, I had to ask myself why does my mouth taste like an armpit? then It dawned on me, I am still in the liquid phase , so I excused my self and went to walgreens to get those travel bottles of mouthwash, I carry them every ware now, along with the brush ups, ( little finger pads with powder paste on them) in my car , purse and office.

The "cheese balls" I refered to have nothing to do with the band. I spoke about them in regards to the Therabreath product because if any one has them they know how stinky they are. Here is the description:

tonsillolith (syn: tonsil stone, calculi of the tonsil) a ball-like accumulation of food particles, bacteria, leukocytes, dead white cells, and dried mucus in the folds of tonsils. These folds are referred to as crypts. Tonsilloliths may contribute to halitosis and sore throats.

Since the Therabreath works so well if someone has this problem, I'm sure it willwork well on any bad breath problem.

wow! well thanks for the info guys. I am going to be banded in 8 weeks and I have a list. I just added mini bottles of mouth wash to it. note to self: bad breath, gas and slimy tongue, check.

The bad breath can come from dehydration, need of more frequent oral hygiene and weight loss. If it is from weight loss the bad smell is really coming from your lungs since ketone are a byproduct of fat metabolism. All you can do is mask it with mints, etc. Brushing your teeth emore frequently can't hurt, but if this isn't the source of your smell you won't get rid of it.

I hacked up a "cheese ball" last night. This morning took out the magni-mirror and there was another one in a cavern in my left tonsil. I have occasionally had these and always blamed it on my allergies, and the craters on my tonsil from so many cases of tonsillitis growing up. I will definitely get me some of that Therabreath.
