Having Trouble After Fill...

Recommended Posts

is this just what restriction's like? I can eat 1/2 bowl of cheesie grits, but feel pain after drinking a Protein Shake too quickly. I'm fine drinking coffee or Soup, but can't eat a bite of pretzel. I think I really needed this fill, I've been really overeating lately, but this is HARD. I feel like everything I eat that's not hot and soft is wrong. Just had the fill on Friday, this will get better, right?

Hi Sasha,

I was banded 05/11/12, and just had another fill on Friday of this past week.

Friday night I could drink Water, nibbled on a cracker (until it was absolute mush), and that was pretty much it.

Yesterday, I had a can of low sodium progress tomatoe Soup, a glass of iced coffee, and sips of Water all day. I wasn't hungry at all, but had that "mental hunger". I was concerned that I wasn't getting enough calories or fluids, but the DR's office told me to "hang tight for a few days".

Today, I've had a glass of orange juice, two nibbles of chocolate (bad, I know, but I'm also PMSing), and two spoonfulls of tomatoe soup. I'm thinking I'm too tight, and need an unfill, but I'm trying to do what my DR's office says, and just wait it out.

THIS fill is totally unlike my previous fills. THIS fill feels like "OMG I can't eat/drink/get comfortable".

My LAST fill was very similar to what you're experiencing now, just reversed.

If it wasn't cold and/or soft - I couldn't eat it. Let me tell you, it took a long time to get used to room temperature soup! That sensation only lasted about a week, thank heavens!

Keep us posted on how you're doing, and I'll hope for the best for us both!

if you can't drink, you need an unfill!

if your fill was just this past Friday, it can be normal. You may have some swelling from the fill that will go away. Just don't push your luck and get stuff stuck because then you may get even more swelling and need an unfill. Good luck to you two!

Thanks you guys. I can drink, I just can't drink cold liquids quickly. And I can eat, I guess, only if it's hot liquid. I tried to eat some Pasta (teeny bites, chewed till mush) a little while ago and ended up throwing it up. Tea is going down fine...

I'll try to do an extra day of liquids I guess, maybe I'm irritated. :-( wah. I want to eat!

You shouldn't be eating that soon after getting a fill. Did your doctor tell you to do liquids for a couple days and then mushies? Your stomach has to adjust to the fill and it usually causes swelling. Go back to liquids and if that doesn't help get a little unfilled. I have maybe had two bites of Pasta in over 10 months! Way too filling.

I counted mushy Pasta as a mushy.... regardless, I was able to eat mushy broccoli just fine, so I think perhaps I just may have problems with Pasta.< /p>

And for what it's worth, I would have been doing Protein shakes today, but I can't seem to tolerate cold drinks at all...

Pasta is a definate no no in the lap banders diet..breads, rice, pasta...any starchy food...make sure you take little sips when it comes down to drinking things...no more big gulps..its a complete life change....I was banded 2 years ago and as a person who drank at least a 12 pack of Mt dew a day...I have now not touched soda in 2 years....my health is too important for that " one little treat" I have lost 100lbs and now that I am in a place of significant weight loss, I allow a treat every now and then....in the beginning it is vital to stick completly to a banded program...good luck in the future...u can do it!!

That's exactly what right after a fill is like for me! I gulped down a protien shake not thinking and had to throw up. I have been gradually increasing the thickness of my foods over the last three days, since my fill. Started with protien shakes, then cream Soups, now egg salad.< /p>

My doc says to do liquids for 24hrs then mushies for 24hrs. But I find that I need to do liquids- full liquids for more like two days.

Just work with your body, don't push yourself to eat mushies just because your doc says you can. And the more restriction you have the slower you will have to eat and drink.

I think this is normal. I had a fill last Tuesday and yesterday was the first time I could eat more than one or two bites without a BP. It does get better. Remember to eat and drink slow, stick with liquids if you have to and get your Protein in!

UGH, this is driving me crazy!! I took a very careful sip of grapefruit juice about 5 minutes ago (the first thing I've had this morning) and it STILL hurts. I didn't gulp, I had maybe 2 tbsp....

Do any of you find that you can't drink or eat anything in the morning? Or does this get better after a few days and I'll be able to maybe eat some oatmeal...

FWIW, I feel hungry.

I always have to be more careful in the morning. Have you been throwing up alot, maybe your really swollen?

If you don't think your swollen you may need a tiny unfill. Maybe don't try anything else until noon or so, to give your band a break, then try liquids again. If you can't get liquids down call you doctor. Good luck!

I was able to get down a glass of very hot Water, but I'm still having trouble. I had the teeniest bite of oatmeal and am in pain. So I switched to hot cream of Tomato Soup and even that is gurgling and hurting with one tsp...

I think I"m going to call them and see if I can get 2cc of the 5 they put in taken out...

5cc's does sound like a lot... I try not to pay attention to how much is in my band. I don't even know what the dr filled last week. But I do know the fills are usually 1/2-1cc.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
