Ok I know that spitting up is not a good thing. But, sometimes you just HAVE to! My mother had this done six years ago and can just push her spit up out quietly. Me, I have to literally cough it out. She has tried to explain to me how she "spits" it out quietly, but I am not getting it. I would prefer to be quieter about it just to not disturb my family, co workers or ppl in public places. I know this is kind of gross but I would like to know how you spit up and how to make it quieter!

"spitting up" is not normal and you should not be trying to learn how to spit up properly or quietly. You should learn how to avoid these situations. In my case it would be taking one or more bites too many that would cause this. Slow down when you eat and learn what your soft signs are.

While I do agree with EVERYTHING hummingbird has to say..I do think u mean in the rare occasions u get something stuck and have to get it up. This does happen..but should not happen very often..if it does u need to be adjusted or rules aren't be followed or something. But in my experience when I get something stuck I take a sip of drink and kinda am able to do a swallow or fake burp kind of thing and that usually works very discreetly. Its very rare as I said if ur following everything to a T..but it does happen. By now I pretty much kno what I can tolerate..food choice wise..but sometimes if I piece of chicken is too dry and I don't realize or trying something new or the differences that something is prepared outside of my kitchen can make this happen. But yea, I understand that u don't mean u wanna kno how to do it all the time..just hard to explain..better to just excuse urself and fight it private to get things unstuck. Good luck

whoaa.. dont stick ur fingers down ur throat..that creates a harsh gag and actually throwing up..which gives a greater chance of hurting ur band..like slippage..just a veryyyyy bad idea. if its stuck..drink, and swallow..keep doin it..!! it WILL come unstuck..just please please dont make urself actually throw up. bad bad idea!!:w00t:

For me its a loud and violent coughing process and is quite like a real vomit without the stomach acid or copious quantity. I cant do it on purpose, at will or just because I feel I need to.

I feel a premonition that something will get stuck, then I feel blocked - it can stop there and clear within a few minutes but if I feel a sudden sharp pain by my belly button, and start to salivate, I know its coming up. I can control it, meaning I can hold it down till I get to a toilet, but it comes up in a huge coughing gurgle. I do have to lean over and sort of tense to make it come up, but I couldnt do that if it was just blocked and not coming up anyway.

But yeah, its loud, not discreet. I may be wrong but I would imagine that being able to just make it come up would mean your throat, pouch and muscles are kinda loose and stretched out .... they're supposed to hold things down and not let them up that easily.

This is exactly the way it happens for me as well.

I read this on an old forum response and it works! You put your left hand under your left armpit and pump it (the chicken dance). I almost instantly burp hard and that feeling is gone! Whether or not you do this in public is entirely up to you (smiling).

I sometimes get this even if I chew well and wait between bites. When I get stressed my band tightens a lot and I don't realize how much until something gets stuck. I used to put my finger down my throat and I got really scared when it happened the second or third time (what might happen to the band) so I found this response.

Drinking Water or liquids makes it worse for me.

Good luck!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
