Protein Shots anyone??

Just wondering if anyone has used the protein shots from GNC. Supposedly they are like 40gm of protein in one shot. I don't know if this would really work or be a good idea. I have really having trouble getting my protein in. Meat is not going down well at all. It takes sooo long to eat it, it's not worth it. I am so sick of protein shakes, I do eat a protein bar every morning. My hair is really starting to fall out, and it wasn't thick to begin with. I am using the Biotin and special shampoo. Any idea's suggestions?? I heard somewhere that your body can only use a certain amount of protein at a time, so I don't know if these shots would be effective or not!

Blech! I don't like 'em. But aside from that, they're not made of the most bioavailable protein. Even if your body can absorb 40 g at one time (which, if you need it, it probably can), you'd be better off using a whey protein isolate supplement that will be more fully absorbed. (You'd also be better off finding one that tastes good! I like the Inspire whey protein powders from bariatriceating.com. They contain ~25 g/serving of whey protein isolate, which our bodies "like" better than the protein blend in the shots.)

I use 1/2 a shot twice a day in Crystal light and my hair has stopped thinning. Some posters are not fond of them, but I am. I credit them with my good recovery from Plastic Surgery. I also believe in the whey isolate powders and found a cookies and cream that is so delicious I look forward to drinking it.

How many CC's restriction do you have? Do you think a tiny unfill would help you tolerate food better?

Best wishes,

Mimi

I only have 1.5cc in my band and have only had one fill. I went yesterday for my second fill and the doctor wouldn't give me one. He said I had lost too much weight since 4 weeks ago(10lbs) ha imagine that...me losing too much weight. I thought that was kind of silly but he said he only wants 1/2 to 1lb a week. I am just so sick of the shakes. I think I might try the shots, it has to be better than nothing!! What brand of cookies and cream shake do you love?

Sooooo, so so so nasty. I was using the walmart shots and they weren't bad at all.... just a little thick for my taste. I decided to get a box of the GNC (IDS) shots. BIG mistake. I can gag them down, only because I paid $44 for the box of them. Even then, I have to water them down so it's not so bad.

I have been doing the Protein shots but I can not get them down alone YUCK!!! I started putting mine in the blender with my Protein shake ingredients and I am able to get it down this way......no worries

Good Luck

I use the Protein Shots made by Body Choice Nutrition (www.bodychoicenutrition.net). They have 25g of protein in one shot for only 100 calories. I always drink one right after working out now. And, I use them as a supplement when its time to eat, but its not convenient for me to eat. I don't use it as a Meal Replacement. I'll have a small meal later to make up for it, but then I don't feel bad going longer than 5 hours between meals. I also used them a lot when I was tight after this last fill and the 72 hours after a fill when my doctor wants me on Clear liquids (she is OK w/the shots during this time).

I like the taste of the ones I've been using, but I haven't tried any others to compare. I've heard your body can only absorb up to 30g of protein at one time, but I don't know if that is really true. I do believe the shots work. When I didn't have restriction and would normally be really hungry if I skipped a meal, the shot would quiet my hunger for a couple hours. I have been very diligent in always getting my protein in (using the shots when necessary) and have been consistently building lean body mass. Yes, actually INCREASING it. My surgeon's office has a scale that breaks everything out and they are always amazed that I am increasing my lean body mass while I am losing overall weight at the same time. A lot of times, people lose fat and lean body mass together.

I admit that I am a little obsessed w/building muscle, though. I've been pushing myself more physically than I ever have before. I've heard it helps to prevent loose skin. And, it raises your base metabolic rate. I'm all for that!

I love the protein shots, and I use the ones with 27 g of protein in them. I like the fruit punch ones. A little thick but tolerable on the palate.....even though real protein is still the best way to go, these are good in a pinch...

I use the ones from Walmart when I can afford to buy them. I mix them with crystal lite and they are not bad at all. I do have 2 atkins drinks a day, and eat enough protein to be able to get in 100-125 g a day of protein. No problem with hair falling out, and I really think this was helping me lose more weight when I was using these daily. Now i plan on going back to the bullets because I have hit a plateau. I am 10 months out and 67 lbs down.

I use the walmart protein shots 'super whey' fruit punch flavor. They are a bit thick in consistency (nectar thick) for me but they're bearable. They're pretty good with water or added to crystal light in my opinion. They're 26g protein & 110calories at about $2.20 per 2.9oz vial.

They used to be among the best-quality proteins available, but it's now known that whey protein isolate is far more reliably bioavailable. You might be better off spending $$ on a low-volume whey protein supplement. The Inspire protein powders from bariatriceating.com can be mixed with just 4 oz. liquid (though they're good mixed with more), are 100% whey protein, and they taste good. They come to around $1.42 per serving (with 25-30 g protein), so they're pretty reasonable, as supplements go, too.

ETA: No one really knows how much protein can be absorbed at once. Lots believe our ability to absorb changes widely according to our bodies' needs (much like the absorption of water-soluble vitamins). Most agree that excess---unless you're eating enough calories for it to be stored as fat---doesn't pose any risk.

I am among those who aims for LOTS of protein--100 g/day. I do spread it out over the day, but would never achieve that level without supplementation.
