Question for Women ONLY

Ok, ladies, I've been on Depo provera and have not had a period in 3 years. I am 6 days post op and started my period last night. This is very strange for me and was wondering if anyone else experienced this. Is this a coinsidence or did surgery/drugs "knock out" my Depo Shot? I was spoiled for 3 years not having one and this is definately not a time I would want it.

It's the anesthetics. In my preop paperwork Doc warned his female patients that we may start some spotting or mensus very early for the month.

Don't worry. I would however use other contraceptions until your sure your depo is working. Last thing you need right now is a baby!

Funny I'm having the opposite problem and was coming on here to post a question....

I should have started my period and haven't. I can only assume it's the hormone change from surgery/healing.

Prior to surgery I was in full PMS mode about to start any day had surgery and now nothing...

Anyone else experience this?

I am not up to date on all the new stuff like depo as I have not had a visit from aunt flo in over 20 years, but...

they gave me antibiotics to take after surgery. I know antibiotics will make "the pill" ineffective, but not sure how they effect the depo shot.

If I were you, I would use other forms of birth control for awhile if you are in the position where pregnancy could happen.

before n after surgery we rcv blood thinner shots so we wouldnt get blood clots. im on the depo shot 2 n hadnt had a period n a yr until after my surgery. until the hefran is out of ur system ur going 2 bleed. mine was very heavy n i was very upset but what could i do? nothing but deal with it for 2 1/2 weeks then it stopped.

I was on the depo shot for over 3 years and about 5 days after my surgery i started my period.. hadnt had one for 3 years. i only had my period for 4 days and the dr said it was normal with the changes going on with my body..

The same thing happened to me. I have been on Depo off and on for at least five years. I had my period a few days after surgery it was heavy and then over with. I went back to my "normal" which is all of the annoying symptoms of PMS but no period the next month. Haven't had it since and my surgery was two years ago. I don't think you have anything to worry about! Good Luck!

Thanks so much, Ladies for all your advice. The drugs and blood thinner makes sense, I just havent had "aunt flo" for a while and its NOT a welcomed guest.

Actually the same thing happened to me. I was suprised b/c I had just finished my cycle about 3 days pre-op. Sure enough, AF came to visit again about a week after surgery.

There are a few threads on this in the Ladies Room

I got my period the day after surgery.I have a question, how long should you wait to have sex?

I am also on Depo... I had to stop before the surgery.... I was due for a shot close to my surgery date but I did not take the shot... I imagine that the "trauma" of the surgery may have caused you to have a period... or... if you had to stop like I did, that is probably why...
