Do any of you guys get any kind of numbing medication with fills? Mine really hurt to the point I was in tears. I heard from a few people that they have had numbing meds, is this true?

The fill needle seriously doesn't hurt. I don't even feel a poke.

I got my first 1cc fill on 12/28 and boy did it hurt! I literally had tears rolling down which he noticed and then changed needles. The new needle didn't hurt as much so I don't know exactly what was the issue. Normally I can sleep on my stomach but after my fill...I was in agony. It got much better after a week. Anyone know the name of the numbing spray and if we can buy it or do you need a prescription?

I agree!! Isnt that weird???? ..not that I agree, but that they hurt more than a fill! Ha!

No pain for me and he didn't offer to numb it. I mean it was uncomfortable and awkward but no real pain.

My doc offers it, but the way I figure it one way or the other I feel one needle stick, so I just get the fill.

I have not been offered anything to numb the pain, but I agree with the above. You're gonna get a needle stick either way. Frankly, I don't even notice any kind of pain during fills. He has me bear down like I am going to have a BM, and maybe because of concentrating on that I don't notice the pain of the needle? Also, the needle is a very thin needle.

I suggest you ask your Dr to do your fills under fluorscopy so he can see the port clearly and you'll only get one stick. Earlier in this board there are mentions of people having their port poked so many times that a hole forms and they have to have a revision.

For my fill today they gave me a lidocaine shot, which I don't like because it stings going in and you can build up a sensitivity to it. However, my fill was done under fluoroscopy so it was a single stick and the whole thing was done in about 15 seconds. She did say that if the first three fills go well then she will do blind fills in the office (there's no charge for in-office fills as some Drs can't charge for them when they're done in the office), but will add in a fill under fluorscopy every 3rd fill after the first three to make sure everything is still okay.

Fluorscopy may be more expensive (most insurance will cover the total cost) - and there's no copay - but the benefits far outweigh the cost. You get to see if your band is positioned correctly, if the tubing is in good shape, if the port is in the right position, and more. It's nice to have the reassurance that everything looks like it's supposed to.

I had my first fill this week and I was a little nervous since I didn't know exactly what to expect. She gave me a shot of lidocain (sp) which she was very careful to push in slowly so it didn't burn. Then she did the fill and I had no pain. I am really glad they give the first shot tho because I could not swallow the water with the 3 cc fill and so she had to go back in and remove 1/2cc!!

I don't think I will be so worried for the next ones now that I know how caring my NP is at my bariatric center. She herself is banded and a whimp (her words) so she is all about zero pain!! That's my mantra too!!

This is ridiculous!!!!!! The moment they saw you were uncomfortable, a good Dr. would have locally anesthetized the area!

DO NOT LET THEM DO THIS TO YOU AGAIN!

You TELL them you want a local and if they refuse, find a new Doctor. There is no need at all for this to happen to anyone!!!!

I am so sorry you had to experience this.

P.S. The fill needle my Doctor uses is VERY large, but the anesthetizing needle is teeney tiney. I would MUCH rather be aware of the small needle than the elephant needle, thank you very much!

My first doctor didnt use xray but did use lidicane injections. Never quite understood the whole needle to use a needle again. My new NP uses the spray numbing stuff (forgot what it is called) I like that much much better! She also uses an xray machine to see where my port is so she is able to get it right off. To the poor girl whos port is tilted, do you not worry about how many times they are penetrating the port? I thought I had read somewhere on here that there are a certain number times that it can be pricked......I know its in the thousands but if you are having to be stuck 30 times each fill, that would worry me!

Did you ever find out what the name of the numbing spray that you used? I need to get some!!! LOL...I had searing hot pain the first time I was filled in Dec. I go tomorrow and I'm soooo scared but I'm going to use this cream my mom uses when she goes for her dialysis treatments. I hope it works!

The numbing cream that my mom uses for her dialysis treatments worked today! I still felt everything but with much less intensity. Yippee!

Had my 1st fill today; I received a numbing shot which just stung a bit. I did feel the prick when they did the fill but no other pain; she got it on the first try with no xrays and was done in about 5 seconds. Bled a little of course; they stuck a big band-aid on, had me drink a cup of water and sent me on my way. MUCH less traumatic than I thought it would be; getting blood drawn is hell so I was horribly nervous about the experience (unnecessarily, I might add)...

Hi Guys, I had another fill yesterday with 1 cc, when I drank the water it was kind of hard getting down, today seems better. I just drank very slowly a 10 oz protein drink...it went down but I am totally stuffed and cant drink a cup of tea...Is this anything to worry about?

Considering they normally don't want you taking in more than 4-6oz at a time after a fill (or at least that's what I was told), being stuffed after a 10oz drink, especially a protein one, makes perfect sense to me. I was full just from the water they had me drink in the office after the fill, and I hadn't even eaten yet that day. I think it's gonna take a few days for the swelling to go down before you stop getting full so quickly, but on the bright side, at least you know you have restriction.

Nope. I just had my first fill this morning, and was very nervous. He said I didn't need to be numbed, and he was right. I barely felt it

I go for my first fill on tuesday but I was told they will be numbing the area with a needle around the port site. I may opt for no numbing considering either way I'll feel one needle stick....
